Vernon Drake

Vernon Drake, 85, passed away on October 23, 2019. He was born on September 30, 1934 to Vern and Elenora Drake at their home on Lister Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri.

Vernon spent many summers as a youth working and playing on his grandparent’s farm near Roscoe, Missouri. He loved fishing and collecting arrowheads on his grandparent’s land near the banks of the Osage River. Vernon graduated from East High School in 1951 and worked for the railroad and also as a machinist for Westinghouse. He married the love of his life, Sue Drake, in December, 1958. Vernon attended cosmetology school in the 1960s and owned/operated Drake’s Hairdressing Salon in Shawnee, Kansas for over 20 years before retiring. He loved his family, fishing in Canada with family/friends, hunting, good books, Mom’s homemade pies, fried okra, and naps. Vernon was a member of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and enjoyed going to pow wows. Vernon was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and will be dearly missed.

Vernon is survived by his children, Pam (Charlie) Stille, Dale (Mary) Drake, Pat Drake, Dan (Kristi) Drake; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services

The family is planning a private service and celebration of life.

    My sincere condolences to the family. It has been several years since I saw Vernon, but I have fond memories of him keeping my hair so well coiffed. He was a professional–making sure that every hair was in place. We had many enjoyable discussions during my weekly visits to his salon.
    Wishing the family comfort and peace over his passing away.
