Peter J. Hartwick, Jr.

Peter John Hartwick, Jr.

July 28, 1969 — March 19, 2020

The Hartwick family of Overland Park, Kansas, is sad to announce the passing of Peter John Hartwick, Jr., their beloved husband, father and son on March 19, 2020.  He died peacefully following a long battle with cancer.

Pete was born on July 28, 1969, at Laughlin Air Force Base, Del Rio, Texas, to Captain and Mrs. (Ann) Hartwick, one week after the first landing of men on the moon.  His years as a military family dependent saw him residing in Virginia, Germany, New Jersey, Texas and eventually Colorado, where he received both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder.  He later earned an MBA from the University of Chicago.  In 1997 he joined Sprint’s systems engineering group in Chicago where he directed the deployment of the largest cellular CDMA system in the US at the time.

Subsequently, after moving to Overland Park in 2002, he was finally able to pursue his life-long passion, instilled by his grandfather Paul, for finance and investing, becoming a personal wealth management advisor and planner with the LPL Financial Group.  His greatest source of satisfaction in his professional life was his ability to bring financial peace of mind and security to his many clients.  A source of great pride for Pete was the establishment, along with two other founders, of the Thomas P. O’Sullivan IV Foundation in 2008.  The group supports colon cancer research at the University of Kansas through various fund-raising activities in the Kansas City area.

Pete married Diane Everett in 1999 and together they raised their daughter, Julianna, who is a senior at Blue Valley Northwest High, earning the distinction of National Honor Scholar.  She is also an accomplished equestrian, winning the title of Circuit Champion at the Colorado International Horse Show competition. She and her dad were active in the Girl Scouts, where Pete was the summer camp favorite zip line instructor.  Pete is survived by his wife and daughter; his parents and half-sister Elizabeth, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins on both sides of the family.

He contributed so much, to so many, so quietly. With dignity and high integrity. He will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to KU Endowment, 3901 Rainbow Boulevard, Mail Stop 3012, Kansas City, KS 66160, to benefit colo-rectal cancer research. Online contributions may be made at KU Endowment. Please indicate that donations are for the Pete Hartwick memorial.  In addition, the family wishes to express our deep appreciation to everyone at the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.  It is a non-profit organization that specializes in end-of-life care.  We gratefully acknowledge the highly individualized and compassionate care shown to Pete and our entire family.  Contributions will be gratefully appreciated. To donate go to Kansas City Hospice.

  1. Nancy Solomon Says:

    Diane and Julianna,
Pete was a very special man who will be greatly missed. When Lanny died, Pete helped me navigate through all the paperwork and figure out what I needed to do. That was such a blessing. Throughout the time I’ve known Pete he was not only a trusted advisor, but also, a trusted friend. If there is anything I can do for you in any way, please call me

  2. Theresa and Paul Pittman Says:

A very beautiful tribute and an impressive life. We will always remember Pete as a very proud family man. He always had a warm smile and genuine interest in building friendships with his neighbors. We were blessed to know him.
Our deepest sympathies Diane, Jules and family.
