Peggy Lee Barto

Peggy Lee Barto of Overland Park, KS died Friday May 6, 2022. She was born May 3, 1934 in Yale, KS to Frank and Mary Bergant Barto. She graduated from Frontenac KS High School. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Pittsburg State University, where she was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, and a Master’s Degree in Reading also from Pittsburg State University. She also attended the University of Kansas and Ottawa University. She taught in the Frontenac, KS and Pittsburg, KS school district before moving to Johnson County in 1963. She then taught in the Shawnee Mission School District where she ended her career as a reading specialist.

Peggy was a member of the Kansas National Education Associate, International Reading Association, National Education Association and Delta Kappa Gamma honorary education sorority. She was also a life member of Kansas P.T.A and Pittsburg State Alumni Association. Survivors include sister Betty Close, nephew David Close, niece Marianne Kerr, great niece Jessica Close & Kaylie Allen, great nephews Christopher Close, Eric Kerr & Travis Close and special cousin Holly Day. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank & Mary Barto and an infant sister.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 12th, 2022 from 4-6 pm at the Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee, Kansas. She will be laid to rest in Pittsburg, Kansas.
