James "Jim" Spawn Obituary

James “Jim” Allen Spawn, 76, of Weatherby Lake, MO went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 24, 2022, at home with his loving family by his side.

He was born September 13, 1946, in St. Paul, MN to Jimmie and Rose May Spawn. He is survived by his wife Melissa Spawn; son Jason Spawn (Jill) of Arizona and daughter Esther Spawn Morris (Lonnie) of Louisiana; brothers Nick DeMike and Bill DeMike; sisters Sandra Pastorius, Gloria DeMike-Plaisted, Carleen DeMike; a grandson, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends that were like family.

Jim graduated from Wilson High School in 1964 and joined the US Air Force. After his service in California, he moved to Oregon and Colorado, where he was a business owner, cattleman, and association director. Moving to Kansas City in 1992, Jim met his cherished Melissa Mathis Spawn. They were married in 1995 and lived a wonderful life full of love and adventures.

Jim was an entrepreneur and owner of Attaché International. He was an accomplished writer winning several publication awards, including the prestigious Gold Award from the International Automotive Media. He was the president of the North Kansas City Historical Society and an avid historian. He was also a commissioned Kentucky Colonel.

As a cancer survivor, he loved giving back with good works. Each spring he brought daffodils to the doctors, nurses, and patients of various hospitals where he was previously a cancer patient. He was a 4th Angel Mentor that counseled those fighting cancer. He was a self-taught musician and formed the A-String Band, which frequently played to oncology and hospice patients.

Jim enjoyed Model A Fords, fishing, singing, and most of all he loved people. He was the founder of the Dust Bowl Jamboree, where the contributions went directly to the local community. He was a Meals on Wheels volunteer and drove his antique Model As to deliver the meals. With his love of antique cars, he was the editor of the Model A Ford Club of America’s Restorer magazine and Classic Thunderbird Club International’s Early Bird magazine. Jim was proudly inducted into the Model A Ford Hall of Fame in 2021.

Jim will be remembered for his sense of humor, extensive giving, knowledge, and wisdom. Bringing sunshine to others brought him so much happiness. He leaves a grieving but proud and loving family, full of Jim stories that will last forever. His giving spirit will continue in all of us.

The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and care given by Melissa Spawn, Susie Barber, and Kansas City Hospice. We are sincerely grateful to the many friends and family who have given us support and comfort during this time of loss. He was the heart and soul of our family.
