Harry Stewart Obituary

Harry A. Stewart, MD passed on November 30, 2022, now relieved from the degenerative disease of vascular dementia. Harry lived with his wife, Betsy, at Lake Quivira for 28 years of their 30-year marriage. He practiced psychiatry for over 50 years. Graduating from KUMC, Harry opened a thriving practice on the Plaza in KC, on the corner of Broadway & 47th Street. The family enjoyed many Thanksgivings in his office watching the Plaza lights turn on.

Harry was Psychiatry chair at KUMC, CEO at two psychiatric hospitals in KC, head of the Addiction Recovery Unit at Advent Health, and on medical staff at five hospitals. After retirement, he co-authored the book "Heart of the Courageous", about healing shame-based anger. Harry was revered by many and honored for saving lives from addiction and other illnesses.

He thrived in the nature of the lake as well as its lovely golf course. He loved golf, barbershop and traveling. Harry sang with Heart of America barbershop chorus for over 25 years, traveling with Betsy around the country to compete in barbershop competitions.

Yet his most notable and memorable trait was his ongoing perseverance in seeking God's love over his life and others. His never-ending acceptance of life and pursuit of all that was good and healing was a constant blessing for family and friends.

In addition to his wife, Betsy, Harry leaves his children, Laura Sippel (Jack), Jon Stewart (Karen), Chris Stewart (Angie), Tricia Shiu and Brian Stewart (Jill), his bonus children Erin Blodgett (Chris) and Katie Perkins (Kyle), 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves his brother Denis (Judy), a constant in his life and so loved by him.

His family thanks Prairie Elder Care and Ascend Hospice for their enormous love and excellent care for Harry these past two years. They were constantly present, highly-skilled and loving to all visitors during that difficult time.

Services will be held on December 18 at 2pm at the Lake Quivira clubhouse, Lake Quivira, KS.
