David Kinzie Obituary

David Franklin Kinzie died on December 4, 2022 at Shawnee Gardens Healthcare and Rehab Center following a long illness.

David was born on February 2, 1941 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was adopted by David Caleb and Florence Kinzie of Clovis, New Mexico.

He spent his entire childhood in Clovis, NM, He graduated from Clovis High School in 1959.  He immediately enlisted in the Army National Guard and served in the Army National Guard for 27 years. He served in both New Mexico and Kansas. He was the first Kansan to ever graduate from the National Guard Sergeant Major Academy, an accomplishment of which he was very proud.

He married Jannie Ada Netzel on December 12, 1959 in Clovis, New Mexico. Their union produced four children, Gwen, Brenda, Steven, and Kevin.

He then married Dessie Jo Beach on December 1st, 1972.  They had no children together. They were married for 47 years until her death on February 21, 2020.

In the early years of their marriage, they enjoyed square dancing. Throughout the years he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping with his children. He was also involved in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts activities with their children.

He was active in church, and attended both Methodist and Church of the Brethren churches over the years.

He devoted many of his years to being involved and active in Masons and Shrine, and was a member of multiple Masonic and Shrine organizations, too numerous to mention. He held multiple state and local leadership offices. He served as a leader in DeMolay and Job’s Daughters organizations as well. He and Jo were members of the Tonganoxie, Kansas Legion of Honor, Post 41.

David enjoyed maintaining his household and land at his retirement home in Tonganoxie, KS. He spent countless hours mowing, gardening, and trimming trees. He always enjoyed having pets, including cats and dogs. He treated them like they were his children.

He is preceded in death by his parents, David and Florence Kinzie, a sister, Geraldine Wofford, his wife, Dessie Jo, and a son, Steven W. Kinzie.

He is survived by his children, Gwen Cannova-Kinzie (Michele), Brenda Beck (Michael), and Kevin Kinzie (Kathy). He is also survived by his sister, Patty Eaton (Wes). He is survived by 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him.

A Memorial Service will be held at 9:00 AM on December 28th, 2022 at Amos Family Funeral Home at 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas, followed by graveside services at 1:30 PM at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kansas.
