VICTOR VAN WALLEGHEM
1930-2022
Victor Van Walleghem, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, departed this earth after a prolonged illness on January 20, 2022. He passed away at home surrounded by his family and caregivers.
Born September 26, 1930 in Kansas City, Kansas to Victor and Marie (Baldwin) Van Walleghem, Victor was a life long resident of Shawnee, Kansas and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Educated at St. Benedicts College in Atchison, Kansas he graduated with a degree in Economics. He married Joan Zimmer in 1952 while stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. Victor is a Korean War Veteran. After the war, he worked for Colgate Palmolive in Kansas City, Kansas until he retired in 1985.
Victor’s faith and his family were very important to him. He also enjoyed reading, investing, physical fitness and traveling. In retirement, Victor traveled extensively with his wife, Joan. He was an avid cyclist. He enjoyed regular bike rides with friends and family, his many biking trips both home and abroad and his annual summer bike rides across Kansas.
Victor is predeceased by his wife Joan, his daughter, Kathy Morton and his infant son, Jules Christopher. Survivors include his children, Joseph Van Walleghem (Robin) of Shawnee, Kansas, Michael Van Walleghem (Mary Jo) of Stilwell, Kansas, Carl Van Walleghem (Dena) of Lenexa, Kansas, Marie Henkel (Doug) of Olathe, Kansas, Lucia Jones (Richard) of Manhattan, Kansas and Julia Bellemere (Matt) of Lawrence, Kansas, 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Alice Wambua, along with Natalee Raymond, Susan Lee, and Ruth Brane, for their dedication and tender care of Victor during his final years. They brought much joy and comfort to both Victor and the entire family.
Rosary and Visitation at will be at 10am at St. Jospeh Catholic Church on Monday January 24, 2022. A funeral mass will follow at the church at 11am. Burial will be directly following the service at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. To view the livestream of the funeral CLICK HERE .
