Vernon was born in Hallowell, Kansas and lived in Shawnee, Kansas for the last 55 years. In his teenage years he was an exceptional athlete who became an avid sports fan and fisherman. During his last 7 years when he survived a fall and became paralyzed, he continued to enjoy activities where he became an expert and visionary in 5 Crowns- a pattern and number recognition card game.

He always felt blessed to have married the love of his life Janice Nading on June 7, 1958, in Oswego, KS who preceded him in death. Survivors include his daughter Debra Simmons, Shawnee, KS; son Alan Johnson, Overland Park, KS; 4 grandsons Grant & his wife Katie Simmons; Alex & his wife Kaleigh Simmons, Neil Johnson, Aidan Johnson, 1 great granddaughter Summer Simmons.
