Dave was born September 24, 1942, to Roy Davis Housh, Jr. and Delores Hogan Housh, the oldest of five children.
Dave was an athletic child and played baseball into his adult years. He was a pitcher in his teen years and then shifted to left field as an adult, when he played both baseball and fast-pitch softball. He could throw out a runner at home plate from left field on the fly.
When Dave was 23, he took up golf and over the course of his life he scored three holes-in-one. He was fortunate to get to play golf at Pebble Beach in California, where he got a birdie on the 7th hole. He also got to play golf on the island of Maui and the big island of Hawaii. He really enjoyed golf trips to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, every few years with his many golfing buddies. In recent years, he was an instructor for the First Tee program at Sunflower Hills Golf Course, teaching golf and life skills to young beginning golfers. He also established a golf group at church, and those friends enjoyed many golf outings.
Dave graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1960, and from Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University) in 1964 with a degree in business. Soon after graduation, Dave moved to Fort Collins, Colorado and joined the Wyoming Air National Guard, where he ran the computer system.
Dave married Doris Jackson on July 24, 1965. Dave worked as an accountant for Union Manufacturing Company in Fort Collins at that time and played baseball and fast-pitch softball that summer.
Dave and Doris moved to Kansas City in 1966 and Dave began working for the Hedges Insurance Agency. He completed studies to earn the title of Chartered Life Underwriter. They moved to West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1968 and Dave worked for two years teaching insurance agents through the Life Insurance Marketing Institute at Purdue University. They were fortunate during that time to attend an assembly featuring Neil Armstrong, a Purdue graduate, after his return from the moon. They also attended many Purdue football and basketball games. They moved back to Kansas City in 1970 and he again worked for the Hedges Agency. In 1971, he was hired by American General Life Insurance in Houston, Texas as the Director of Training. He wrote his own curriculum and again trained agents, this time for American General.
Dave and Doris welcomed their daughter, Deanna, on August 31, 1975. In 1976, they moved to Denver, Colorado where Dave became the Regional Director of Sales for American General. His territory included North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho. He visited insurance agencies and helped the agents increase their sales.
Dave and Doris returned to Kansas City in 1981. Dave began working as a property and casualty underwriter for the Housh Insurance Agency, where he worked until retiring in 2001.
Dave and Doris moved to western Shawnee in 1983 and joined Monticello United Methodist Church, where they still have their membership. Dave spent many years greeting visitors on Sunday mornings, and he mowed many acres of church grounds on his riding lawnmower. He served on the Building Committee for three years as the church built a new sanctuary and preschool area which opened in 1990. Monticello church folks remember him fondly as one of the nicest, friendliest men they have ever known. He took quarters to church on Sunday mornings and gave one to each child in attendance so they would have money to put in the collection plate. He hoped to instill in them a life-long commitment of support to the church.Dave was a loving and devoted husband, father, relative and a great friend to all who knew him.
Dave was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2024 and was bed-bound the last few months of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Steven and Greg Housh, his sister Anne Housh Becker, his aunt, Alice Hogan, his nephew, Todd Housh, and nieces Cady Housh, Melinda Housh and Angela Scott. He is survived by his wife, Doris, of the home, brother, Clark Housh (Jackie), Basehor, KS, daughter, Deanna Likes (Ryan), Manhattan, KS, grandson Ira Likes, Manhattan, KS, nephews Gene Scott, Garland, TX, and Cole Housh, Carlinville, IL.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, November 3, at 11:00am at Monticello United Methodist Church, 23860 West 75thStreet, Shawnee, KS; burial to follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Shawnee. A visitation will precede the service at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Monticello United Methodist Church or The Parkinson's Foundation.
