Robert D. "Bob" O'Donnell, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026, in Lenexa, Kansas, at the age of 93. Bob was born on August 5, 1932, in Girard, Kansas and married Cathy O’Malley on July 19, 1958. Bob lived a life rich in service, dedication, and love.
Bob's early life was marked by his honorable service in the United States Coast Guard, where he served aboard the USCGC Winnebago off the coasts of Korea and Japan, as well as being stationed at Honolulu, Hawaii and Key West, Florida, from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1956. Bob's service earned him respect and gratitude, and late in life, he received care from the VA for a medical disability related to his service.
In his professional life, Bob was a master electrician with the IBEW in Missouri. He further expanded his expertise as an electrical estimator, project engineer, and electrical designer for various companies across Kansas, Missouri, and the eastern United States. Bob retired in 2008, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and diligence.
Bob had a passion for dancing, especially the polka, where his charm often left his beloved wife, Cathy, waiting in line for a chance to dance with him. A devoted sports enthusiast, Bob was a season ticket holder for the Kansas City Royals and found joy in coaching youth baseball at Johnson County 3&2. His commitment to the sport extended to roles as field manager, scorekeeping instructor, and even to designing the scorekeeping stands himself.
A man dedicated to his community and faith, Bob was affiliated with several organizations: the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), the Shawnee Sunrise Optimist Club, and the St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.
Bob is preceded in death by his son, Shawn C.; his parents, Evelyn E. (Van Buren) and Curtis J.; and his brothers, John "Jack" (Clara) and Patrick W. (Nancy). He leaves behind a loving family that includes his devoted wife, Catherine M. "Cathy"; daughters Tresa M. "Tracy" Ellis (Dan) and Patti M. O'Donnell; son Robert D. Jr.; grandsons Ryan J. Ellis (Amy) and Timothy D. Ellis (Alexis); great-grandchildren Hannah and Connor; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services to honor Bob's life will be held on August 5, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shawnee, KS. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a rosary at 10:45 a.m. and Mass at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements are provided by Amos Family Funeral Home. Burial will be immediately following at St. Joseph Cemetery, 61st & Quivira Rd., Shawnee, KS.
Bob's kindness, dedication, and zest for life will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him. May he rest in eternal peace.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Bob’s name to the St. Aloysius Historical Society, P.O. Box 61, Girard, KS 66743.
