Robert "Bob" Lee Thompson Jr., born on August 20, 1946, in North Wilkesboro, NC, decided to take his final road trip on October 18, 2025, at the ripe age of 79 in Overland Park, KS. Known for his quick wit and even quicker reflexes behind the wheel, Bob lived a life full of adventure, laughter, and the occasional need for speed.
Bob's journey began as a proud graduate of Shawnee Mission North, after which he took to the high seas with the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1969. During his service, he earned several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two campaign stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device. Clearly, Bob was never one to shy away from a challenge—or a good story.
After his naval adventures, Bob settled into a long and distinguished 43-year career at Missouri Gas Energy, where he worked tirelessly and served as Vice President of Union Local 281. His colleagues will remember him not just for his expertise but for his uncanny ability to fix anything.
Bob's interests were as varied as his talents. In his earlier years you could find him drag racing, street racing or tinkering under the hood of his car. In his matured years you could find him fishing, camping or riding his motorcycle. He also had a wanderlust that took him on many travels, though his favorite destination was always wherever his family happened to be.
Preceded in death by his father Robert Thompson Sr., mother Shirley Thompson, birth mother Ruth Crabbe, and sister Terry Herdman, Bob leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Chris, who was his co-pilot in both life and love. His children, Kathy (Clark) Finestead, Brian (Kacie) Thompson, and Kari (Nick) Clemens, siblings, Bob B., Bill, Judy, David and his forever doting sister Barb and Alan who will carry on his adventurous spirit. His grandkids Marcus, Jessica, Jason, Hailee, Kayla, and John, along with great-grandchildren Selena and Miley, will forever cherish the stories and lessons he imparted.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Bob's life at a visitation on Wednesday, October 22 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Amos Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS 66203. A funeral mass will be held at Queen of the Holy Rosary, 7023 W 71st St, Overland Park, KS 66204, on Thursday, October 23rd at 10:30 am with visitation from 9:30 to 10:30.
