Richard "Carroll" Gray, Sr., 89, Shawnee, KS passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016 at Brookdale Rosehill, Shawnee, KS.
Carroll was born April 7, 1926 to Catherine and Marshall Gray. He was the second to the last of six children. He grew up in Prairie Village, KS and attended Prairie School and Shawnee Mission North High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy Seabees 134th Battalion. When he returned from WWII he began working for Manor Baking Co. and later for Taystee. He also was co-owner of Shawnee Cleaners and Shawnee Water and Ice Co. Carroll retired from Rieke Brothers Construction Co.
Carroll married Mary Lou Buck in 1948. They had three children. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou on Oct. 9, 1989; daughter-in-law, Donna Gray; and four brother and sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Gary) Eckert; two sons, Richard (Karen) Gray, Jr. and John Gray; sister, Marcella Costello, Santa Clara, CA; six grandchildren, Matthew (Jennifer) Eckert, Melissa (Todd) Schaefer, Christina (Andrew) Pelkey, Jennifer (John) Foscue, Tricia Gray and Terra Gray; ten great grandchildren with one on the way.
Carroll was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 327 and St. Joseph Church. He loved playing golf with all his many wonderful golf buddies. He tried so hard to get back to playing and enjoyed his time at the American Legion very much.
Carroll always had a positive outlook on everything. Never had an enemy, loved to tell jokes, talk politics, dance. He was loved and treasured by his family and friends. Thank you to all friends and people who provided support.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7 at St. Joseph Catholic Church; burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Amos Family Funeral Home, where a rosary recitation will be at 6:00 p.m.
