Raymond “Ray” Allan Schiltz, a cherished father and grandfather passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026 at the age of 88. He was born on March 11, 1938, in Peoria, Illinois, to Albert and Hilda Schiltz, who preceded him in death, along with his sisters, Patricia Stearns and Genevieve Jensen. Ray is survived by his loving daughters, Laura Frans, her husband Clayton Frans, and their daughter Addison Frans; Julie Kaszcki, her husband Ed Kaszycki, and their sons Ryan and Eric Kaszycki. Ray held a deep love for his family and greatly valued the time he shared with them. He also had a special bond with his beloved dog, Mattie, who remained his loyal companion for the last seven years of his life.
Ray proudly served his country in the United States Navy, enlisting on December 6, 1962. He served as a Navy fighter pilot during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant in December 1968. During his distinguished military career, Ray was awarded numerous honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Medal, and Armed Forces Expeditionary – Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Following his service, Ray continued his passion for aviation as a commercial airline pilot. He flew for Trans World Airlines (TWA), where he served as a Captain until his retirement in 2000. His career in aviation reflected his dedication, discipline, and love of flying.
In retirement, Ray embraced life fully. He traveled to Africa on multiple occasions and was an avid big game hunter. He also enjoyed a variety of hobbies including leatherworking, woodworking, and fishing—activities that reflected both his craftsmanship and appreciation for the outdoors.
A burial service will be held in his honor at Leavenworth National Cemetery, located at 150 Muncie Rd., Leavenworth, Kansas, on May 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
Ray will be remembered for his service to his country, his dedication to his profession, and the love he had for his family and the life he built. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
