It is with heavy hearts yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Ramona "Monchi" Ramirez Peralta. Born on January 25, 1938, in Douglas, Arizona, Ramona departed this earthly realm on March 24, 2026, at the age of 88, surrounded by the love of her family in Shawnee, Kansas.
Ramona's journey was one of resilience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Her life's tapestry was woven with threads of hard work, kindness, and a spirited zest for life. A talented seamstress, she devoted over 30 years to the textile industry, where her leadership skills shone as she rose to the position of supervisor. Even after retirement at 62, her nurturing spirit led her to care for her aging mother and serve as a para-professional with the Douglas, AZ Unified School District. Her passion for service extended to her role as an AmeriCorps volunteer, impacting countless lives with her warmth and generosity.
In her youth, Ramona found joy as an avid bowler, and she carried that enthusiasm into her later years through her volunteer work at the Douglas AZ Food Bank and local churches, where she served as a lector. Known for her craftiness and skilled alterations, she delighted in using her talents to bring joy to friends and family. Ramona's evenings were often spent enjoying western films, with Chuck Norris and Randolph Scott among her favorite actors.
Diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2023, Ramona faced her illness with courage and determination. After successfully undergoing radiation treatment, she celebrated ringing the bell and experienced a year of remission. Despite the cancer's return, spreading to her lymphatic system, Ramona bravely embarked on immunotherapy, maintaining her spirited outlook until she made the difficult decision to transition to hospice care shortly before her 88th birthday.
Ramona was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Anastacia and Guadalupe Ramirez, her sister Nellie Ramirez, and her cherished children, Francisco "Panchito" Peralta and Leticia Peralta. She leaves behind a legacy of love and strength, survived by her son Jose Gustavo Peralta, daughter-in-law DeeDee Velasquez-Peralta, and grandsons Rosario Ramon Peralta, Adriano Albert Peralta, countless cousins and friends throughout the United States and Mexico.
A Mass to celebrate Monchi's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, March 28th, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 5500 Woodson Rd., Mission, KS 66202. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am, followed by the Mass at 10:30 am.
Ramona's life was a testament to the power of faith, love, and perseverance. She touched many lives, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know her. She will be dearly missed but forever celebrated in our hearts.
