Phillip Jon Vogrin, aged 88, sprinted into the end zone of eternity on October 2, 2026, in Tonganoxie, Kansas, leaving behind a legacy as heartwarming as a PSU Gorilla victory. Born on May 16, 1938, in Kansas City, Kansas, Phil's life was a vibrant tapestry woven with family, friends, and a good dose of stubbornness.
He was proud to serve his country as a member of the United States Army, dedicating six months to active service and an additional five years in the Army Reserves.
Phil was the #1 Gorilla fan—never missing a chance to cheer on his beloved PSU Athletics team. He was the quarterback who led Pittsburg State to the 1961 NAIA National Championship, earning him a well-deserved spot in the Hall of Fame. His passion for sports was matched by his skill on the golf course, where he played until he couldn't anymore, though most would agree it was the 19th hole he truly excelled at. He also couldn’t live without his favorite meal The Chubby burrito at Jalapeños.
Phil rubbed elbows with history, sharing dorm space with none other than Wilt Chamberlain during their time at KU. One summer in the 50s, he even had the chance to play catcher while Satchel Paige took batting practice—a brush with greatness he never forgot.
A frugal man, Phil was an expert in the art of couponing and delighted in delivering care packages filled with Chips, Oreos, Cheez-Its, and essentials like toilet paper, toothpaste, and paper towels. His grandchildren knew they could count on him for back-to-school cash and wise counsel, usually sprinkled with a healthy dose of wit.
Phil was tough and notoriously stubborn, wearing both traits like badges of honor. He often remarked that "pain was relative" and refused pain medication until his final day. When asked if he'd ever been called stubborn, his answer was a resounding, "All my life."
Preceded in death by his parents, Florence Anne (Lane) Vogrin and Herman Henry Vogrin and his adored late wife, Peggy. Along with his dear family, Phil leaves behind a cheering section of Gorillas and friends who will forever echo his rallying cry: "On To Victory."
Services to celebrate Phil's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 2 PM at Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas 66203.
