Patricia A. “Pat” Smith, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully of natural causes on August 30, 2026, in Lenexa, Kansas. She was 95 years old.
Born on January 17, 1931, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Pat lived a life full of love and devotion to her family. She moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, at an early age and graduated from Central High School in 1948. After marrying and welcoming her first two children, Randy and Stacy, she and her husband, Curt Smith, moved to Kansas City, Kansas. They eventually purchased a home in Shawnee, Kansas, where they lived for over 65 years and raised two more children, Shelly and Tony.
Pat worked as a payroll supervisor at the Montgomery Ward Credit Center in Merriam, Kansas, until her retirement, after which she continued working part-time for a CPA firm during tax season. Throughout her career, she built deep, lasting friendships that endured long after her working years.
Pat had a lifelong passion for sports, from playing in her youth to cheering on her children and grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoyed playing bridge, reading mysteries, completing daily crossword puzzles and watching Jeopardy! —and everyone knew not to call her while Jeopardy! was on. An avid reader, Pat kept a journal of every book she finished to help guide her next choices.
As she shared in her legacy recording: “Be kind always. You don’t know what happened to someone before you met them, so be kind.” Her warmth, competitive spirit, and sharp wit were matched only by her remarkable gift for bringing people together.
Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Curt; her son, Tony; her grandson, Sam; her mother, Bee Borg; her stepfather, Eric Borg; and her father, Ray Freeman.
Pat leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her son, Randy; her daughters, Stacy (Mike) Miller and Shelly (Kale) Kiler; 11 grandchildren: Amber, Alex, Christopher, Andrew, Addie, Shea, Montana, Henry, Oliver, Molly, and Stella; and 12 great-grandchildren: Landon, Wyatt, Odin, Avery, Otto, Jade, AJ, Hudson, Zoey, Meyer, Lane, and Hallie, with another expected in December. Pat’s legacy of love and laughter will live on through them all.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during visitation on Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at The Amos Family Funeral Home, located at 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas 66203.
Her family takes comfort in knowing she has been reunited with loved ones who went before her, finding solace in a lifetime of happy memories.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Sage Grove in Lenexa and Brighton Hospice for their care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Johnson County Library Foundation or the City Union Mission in Kansas City, Missouri.
