Mickie Mette’s early life revolved around her loving Italian family. Her mother and father, brother and sister, grandparents and several aunts and uncles were a constant presence in her life. She graduated from Northeast High School in 1948 and remained a loyal Northeast Viking her entire life. After graduation, she began a career at Thompson Hayward Chemical Company, advancing from “copy room” to becoming Owner/President Robert Thompson’s Executive Assistant. She left Thompson Hayward to assume the important occupation of wife/mother/homemaker. After those years, she eventually went back to work for ten years in the office of the Shawnee Fire Department where she was beloved by all the firefighters and staff. She retired in 1996.
Mickie was an amazingly talented person that loved doing things for others. She was famous for her lasagna and Thanksgiving pumpkin pie. She loved decorating for Christmas and cooking for family and friends. Her daughter’s birthday parties were a sight to behold with fun themes like Hawaiian Luau or “Hobo” theme with treats wrapped up in red bandanas attached to a bamboo pole.
Mickie remained an avid reader until her final days, often having two books going at the same time. She loved collecting and displaying Mickey Mouse memorabilia and she really enjoyed going to Disney World where Mickey reigns supreme!
Mickie leaves behind her daughter Toni (Tom) Gray, grandson Nick (Kelsey) Gray, and several nieces and nephews. She will always be remembered for her kind and generous ways. Her life was one that touched many people!
Her family would like to thank the loving staff at Ceder Lake Village Retirement Community and the amazing staff of Brighton Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to her favorite charity that she supported throughout her years: “Father Hanagan’s Boys Home”, 13940 Gutowski Road, Boys Town, NE 68010. boystown.org/grace.
