Michael “Mike” Charlton Grohs, 60, passed away in Kansas on April 13th, 2026.
Born on July 15, 1965, in Memphis, Tennessee, Mike brought a spirit of service and a love for life to everyone he met. Mike was a graduate of Wichita Southeast High School (Class of 1983) and went on to attend the University of Kansas. His professional life was spent mostly in the hospitality and service industries, a perfect fit for a man who found joy in taking care of others.
Those who knew Mike best will remember him for his endless optimism, and his compassion for all living things. He was an animal lover who felt at home in the company of dogs, cats, bunnies, and birds. He found peace outdoors, whether he was on the golf course or behind the wheel. Mike found freedom on the open road and his adventures took him from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts, with countless stops across the American heartland. He also lived briefly in, and made multiple visits to Europe where he gained a broader perspective and appreciation for history and tradition. Mike was truly at home in the kitchen and he was a gifted cook who delighted in the chemistry of preparing a good meal and the joy of sharing it with those he loved.
Michael loved caring for his beloved grandmother and his uncle while living with them in Boston. He loved to drive people around, run errands, shop with them, and take them on trips. After reconnecting with Sue he moved back to Kansas and formed a family with Sue, Sophie and Griffin (and even Stratton)! Michael was a constant cheerleader to the kids and their friends throughout the middle and high school years. He had admiration for all their college ambitions and helped them get to those goals. Through the pandemic, he found such joy in cooking and caring for his Kansas family and neighbors. Michael spoiled us, doing more than we even noticed he was doing!
He is deeply missed.
Mike loved his family and he is survived by his devoted partner, Susan Ballesteros, and her children, Sophie and Griffin, who were a central part of his world. He is also survived by his parents, Dawn and Heinz Grohs; his brother, Randy Grohs w/wife Brenda; his niece, Chelsea Brown, w/husband Tyler, their kids (Mike’s great-niece Paytin, and great-nephew Theo); and his nephews, Taylor Grohs, and Konrad Grohs, w/wife Brianne Grohs.
His memory is cherished by his uncles Tommy Kyle and Jerry Kyle, his aunt Charla Drewry, and his family in Vienna: including cousins, uncle Peter Grohs, aunt Judy Grohs, and aunt Helga Eder.
