Mary Nell Welter, a beloved sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026, in Shawnee, KS, at the age of 94. Born at home in Kansas City, KS, on October 24, 1931, she was the cherished daughter of Ralph Harold Welter and Helen Nell (Strick) Welter.
Mary received her early education at St. Benedict's grade school in Kansas City, KS, and continued her studies at St. Aloysius Academy in Kansas City, MO, from which she graduated in 1949. She furthered her education by attending Donnelly College during its inaugural year.
Mary dedicated her professional life to serving as a secretarial professional for several organizations, where her diligence and organizational skills were highly regarded. Her career was marked by a significant achievement in 1966 when she was named President of the Wyandotte Chapter of the National Secretarial Association, recognizing her contributions to her field.
Her Catholic faith was a cornerstone of her life. For 36 years, Mary was a devoted member of The Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Shawnee, where she spent many hours in Eucharistic Adoration, finding peace and spiritual fulfillment.
Mary's zest for life extended beyond her work and faith. She was an avid writer and painter, known for her beautiful acrylic creations. Her love of gardening brought joy to her and those around her. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel extensively, visiting 43 states, including memorable trips to Alaska and Hawaii. Internationally, she explored nine European countries, with highlights such as visiting the Vatican and enjoying dinner atop the Eiffel Tower.
Mary was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Harold Welter; mother, Helen Nell Welter; sister, Leona Fennesy; brother-in-law, Edward Fennesy; brother, Ralph Welter; sister-in-law, Carol Welter; brother-in-law, Joseph Collins; nephew, James Fennesy; niece, Barbara (Fennesy) Maygers; and niece, Cheri (Collins) Cardwell.
She is survived by her loving sister, Cecelia Collins, and eleven nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory and the legacy of kindness and love she leaves behind.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, located at 5501 Monticello Road, Shawnee, KS 66226. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by the Rosary at 10:40 AM, Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 1150 N 38th Street, Kansas City, KS 66102.
Mary's life was a testament to her faith, her dedication to family and community, and her passion for living life to the fullest. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
