Lois Marquis

Lois Leone Marquis, of Sioux City, IA, was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday evening, August 5, 2026, in the presence of her children at her home. She was 98 years old.

Lois, known by all as Lodi, was born November 30, 1927, in Leeds, IA, to parents Claus and Anna (Prien) Junck. She was the youngest of six children. Lodi was baptized into Christ on October 11, 1930, and confirmed in her faith on June 1, 1941, both at Calvary Lutheran Church in Leeds, IA. Her family was among the founding members.

If you spoke to Lodi and asked her about her childhood she would start by telling you she and her siblings grew up in such a loving and Christian home. She was incredibly close to her Grandma Prien who lived with the family for many years. Lodi’s days were filled with school, church activities, summer church camp, time with family and friends and always spending time with her sister Shirley, who was her lifelong best friend. They loved playing jacks, bowling and going swimming at the Leeds Pool. Lodi would be the first to tell you she was spoiled and was not given many household tasks. She’d say that her mother was just a great homemaker and took care of things.

Lodi attended elementary school in Leeds, IA as well as Leeds High School from which she graduated in 1945. She started working at Swift & Company as a secretary. It was in 1954 that she met the love of her life, George Marquis, through mutual friends. He was a handsome Hospital Corpsman on leave with the Navy. It really was love at first sight. They started corresponding and many letters later, she went to New York City to visit him. It was there that George proposed. They were married at Calvary Lutheran Church in Leeds, IA on September 11, 1955. They made their first homes in Philadelphia, PA, Great Lakes, IL, Gardner, KS and ultimately Merriam, KS. During this time, they welcomed into their hearts a son, Mark Eric, in December of 1964 and a daughter, Kristine Marie, in December of 1967. Lodi loved motherhood and took pride in homemaking. She loved their neighborhood in Merriam. She loved calling on neighbors, crossword puzzles, reading, crafts, sewing quilting, gardening, babysitting and cooking and hosting holiday dinners for visiting family. She was active in their church, Hope Lutheran in Shawnee, KS where she participated in Circle, bible study, the Bereavement Committee as well as sewing tote bags for mission projects and assembling braille books for the blind. She and George built a beautiful life together.

After George’s passing in 1990, she and daughter Kristi decided it was time to move back to be with family in Sioux City, IA. She had come full circle. Her sister Shirley was especially thrilled, as well as cousins and nieces, to have her back “home”. So many memories were made in Lodi’s sunny little kitchen and around her dining room table. Too many to mention. So many blessings.

To say she had a wonderfully loving life filled with faith and family is an understatement. In her much later years, she was blessed to remain in her home under the care of her daughter Kristi who took care of every little thing from mowing the yard to laundry and making sure mom was fed and cared for. Those left to cherish Lodi’s memory are her son Mark (Angelia) of Kansas City, MO; daughter Kristi of Sioux City, IA and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews.

Lodi was proceeded in death by her parents and her siblings, Joyce, Alice, Merlin “Merse,” Ralph “Red,” and Shirley “Shades.”

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 11, at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 1701 NE 96th Street, Kansas City, MO. Visitation is from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm with the funeral following at 12:30pm. Interment will be at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens in Shawnee, Kansas.

A Celebration of Life service is planned for Saturday, August 15, at 10:00 am at Calvary Lutheran Church, 4400 Central Street, Leeds, IA.
