Lewis Frazier

Lewis Duane Frazier, aged 84, passed peacefully on August 26, 2026, in Shawnee, Kansas, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1942, Lewis led a life rich with dedication, passion, and love.

Lewis worked from the age of 10 earning money to buy a bike. He was proud of his work ethic and worked full time at the Rock Island Railroad while he earned both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Psychology. He devoted 34 years of his career to the U.S. District Court, Western District of Missouri, where he proudly served as the Chief Federal Probation Officer from 1983 to 1993. His work was marked by commitment and integrity, earning him respect and admiration from colleagues and friends alike.

Beyond his professional achievements, Lewis was an avid sports enthusiast. A lifelong fan of Kansas City baseball, he rarely missed a Royals game and cherished his season tickets to the Chiefs, although he eventually opted out in favor of watching at home. His love for golf was shared with his dear friend Glen Vaughan, and though they eventually had to set aside their clubs, Lewis remained an enthusiastic follower of the sport. Other close friends over the years were Ralph Oglebay, a neighbor for over 30 years and Joe Brandenburg with whom he shared many interests and adventures.

In the 1980s, Lewis embraced bicycling, sometimes riding from Lenexa to his father-in-law's house in Eudora. This adventurous spirit extended to horse racing, where he immersed himself in the history and strategy of the sport, even winning two "Pick Six" bets at AkSarBen Racetrack. Over 30 years ago, Lewis began going to the gym at Sylvester Powell Community Center in Mission. He rarely missed a day at the gym where he made several friends who were also willing to arrive at the crack of dawn.

Traveling was a lifelong passion for Lewis, who particularly adored the National Parks, with Yellowstone holding a special place in his heart. He and his wife, Gayla, frequently visited, cherishing countless spring and fall trips.

A voracious reader, Lewis enjoyed crime novels, mysteries, westerns, and nonfiction crime stories. He kept abreast of current affairs, engaging in lively discussions with family and friends. Over the last several years, he and Gayla rarely missed watching Jeopardy. He typically nailed the questions about his favorite sports. His love for family was evident in his encouragement of education, offering rewards for scholastic excellence. Alongside his family, Lewis cherished animals, having shared his home with five cats and six dogs over the years.

Lewis is preceded in death by his parents, Olen Emerson Frazier and May Belle Frazier, and his sister, Doris (Frazier) Tremonti. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gayla (Lovelett) Frazier; son, Zachary A. Frazier (Karen); granddaughters Kristen Chilson (Ashley), Marisa Frazier; six great-grandchildren; siblings Joyce (Frazier) Morrow (Howard, deceased), Joel Frazier (Shelley); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

In lieu of formal services, a gathering to celebrate Lewis’s life will be held on September 19th from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Wheat Room at Barley's Kitchen & Tap, located at 16649 Midland Drive, Shawnee.
