Joyce Marie Deckard was born Joyce Marie Lust on February 1, 1950 in Kansas City, Kansas. She was the eldest of five children born to Rosie (VanDerhagen) and Cyril (June) Lust. The family grew vegetables on their two acre farm and she spent many early mornings going with her Dad and brother Ronnie to the farmers market.
Joyce attended Sacred Heart Catholic grade school in Kansas City, Kansas and then went to St. Joseph Catholic High School in Shawnee, Kansas. She married Frank Burton on November 6, 1966 and had two sons, Chris and Jeff.
She married Rod (Wallace) Deckard on February 23, 1991 and they worked together for several years at the Safeway warehouse in Armourdale. Kansas. They moved to Table Rock Lake and there are many fond memories of that time. They moved to Lane, Kansas and many more memories were made especially with Joyce’s grandchildren. They spent endless hours with their Ma and Pa. Joyce loved her grandkids fiercely and would do anything for them.
Joyce was a caregiver her whole life. If anyone needed anything she was there day or night. She took care of Rod when he became disabled and helped to take care of our mother when she started to suffer from dementia.
Joyce loved gardening whether it be flowers or vegetables. She had plants inside and outside that she tended to constantly. She definitely had her Daddy’s green thumb. She loved her cats also and left food out for neighborhood dogs and fed “her” birds religiously.
Our beloved Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, Rosie and June Lust, her husband, Rod Deckard and her son, Jeff Burton. She leaves behind her loving brothers, Ronnie (Joyce Ann) Lust, Mike (Shelley) Lust; sisters Cindy (Doug) Sporleder and Donna Thompson; her son Chris Burton and daughters-in-law Kendra Burton and Lora (Tony) Keithley. And her grandchildren that will love her forever, Cole, Miranda and Conner Burton.
Our family would like to send heartfelt thanks to the entire staff at Hospice House of Olathe. They treated Joyce with such dignity and made the last few days of her life comfortable and peaceful. They never left her room without asking if there was anything we needed. For that we are so very grateful.
Joyce’s wish has always been that her ashes be spread over the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Outside of being with her family, Colorado was her most favorite place to be. So we will say our final goodbye to her in the mountains. She was only 74 years old but leaves a lifetime of cherished memories.
