Joyce Elaine Barmby (née Ewing), a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, in Overland Park, Kansas. Born on December 2, 1937, in Blue Mound, Kansas, Joyce lived a life filled with love, energy, and an unwavering devotion to her family and faith.
Joyce pursued her education at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. Her professional journey was marked by a successful career as a broker in commercial real estate. She was the owner of Mid-Continent Real Estate and brought joy and enthusiasm to her work. After retiring from real estate, Joyce channeled her passion for entertaining and cooking into new ventures. She owned and operated several businesses that reflected her vibrant spirit and love for hospitality, including the Westminster Tea Room and The Glick Mansion Bed and Breakfast. Whether hosting events or sharing meals with loved ones, Joyce’s warmth and creativity left lasting impressions on all who knew her.
A woman of many talents and interests, Joyce was an avid genealogy researcher who cherished uncovering the stories of her ancestors. She also had a remarkable gift for event planning and catering, always ensuring that gatherings were memorable and filled with laughter. Her attention to detail and fun-loving nature made every occasion special.
Joyce’s faith was central to her life. She was devoted to our Lord, Jesus Christ, finding strength and guidance through her relationship with Him. Her commitment to service extended beyond her personal life; she was honored to be a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 70 years and proudly participated in the Daughters of the British Empire.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband of many years, John Raymond Barmby; her beloved children: Sherryl Hunter (David), David Knauss (Stacey), and Ann-Janette Griffin (Brent); as well as her grandchildren: Scott Hunter (Krista), Jill Brown (Jerome), Samuel Knauss (Kaitlin), Jacob Knauss (Justice), and Molly Griffin. She also leaves behind six cherished great-grandchildren: Kaisley, Harlan, Hudson, Holden, Lily Ann, and Benjamin. Additionally, she always had a great love for her stepchildren and their families: Blane Vanlandingham, Brent Vanlandingham, Belinda Hopkins, Amanda Brauer, and Angela Bullock.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Lucille Ewing; her brother Jerry Ewing; and her sister Jeanette Ewing.
Joyce’s legacy is one of love, laughter, faith, and generosity. Her boundless energy and zest for life inspired everyone around her. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her.
