John Andrew Orser “Poppy John” was born June 14, 1938 in Kansas City, Missouri to Loren and Iona. He passed away on May 30, 2026 after a brief battle with leukemia. He attended Merriam Grade School and Shawnee Mission High School. John also served his country in the United States Navy for three years, before embarking on his romantic adventure with Linda starting October 6, 1962, until her passing in 1993. He then found love again with Carolyn, his steadfast companion since September 6, 1996.
John continued in public service by being part of the Postal Service for three decades, proving that neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night could stop his dedication. His volunteer work for the Merriam Fire Department and Shawnee Rescue Squad showcased his commitment to serving others, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
John was a true enthusiast of Mickey Mouse and all things Disney. He also loved testing the odds at the racetrack or perfecting the two-step every Saturday night. He enjoyed trying his luck at the local casinos, making frequent stops at "the boats" where he was known to hit the slots most Thursdays. His BBQ cookouts were delicious, and his pickled tomatoes were the stuff of legend. When he wasn’t gardening or fishing, he could be found outdoors, treasuring the simple joys of nature.
Mr. Orser, as he was known on the softball diamond, dedicated his time to coaching his eldest daughter's team and passionately volunteering for the Johnson County Girl’s Athletic Association. He also earned the affection of his "old ladies" softball team, graciously accepting the moniker "Sweet Cheeks" from his seasoned players.
Preceded in death by his parents, his beloved first wife Linda, siblings Mary Jane, Carl, and Jimmy, and in-laws Ted and Marian, John leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter.
Surviving family includes his wife Carolyn, siblings Lorna and Bill, in-laws Gayle and Carol, daughters Tami (Tom) and Kim (Brad), stepson Jeff, grandchildren Tiffany (Steven), Taylor (Anna), Greg (Lexi), Lindsay (Miles), Kara (Stephen), and great-grandchildren Kayleigh, Carter, Quincey, Hollis, Teddy, and many nieces and nephews.
While we may no longer see him on this earthly stage, John’s legacy of joy, laughter, and mischief will remain etched in our hearts, reminding us all to find the magic in everyday moments.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00am, Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at the Amos Family Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 11:00am. John will be laid to rest at Shawnee Mission Memorial Gardens, 23215 W 75th St, Shawnee, Kansas.
