John Sawyer McClung, affectionately known as Sawyer, graced the world with his joyful presence on July 24, 2025, at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Though his time with us was brief, ending peacefully at his family home on October 15, 2025, in just 83 days he touched countless hearts and left a legacy of love and hope.
Sawyer spent his days surrounded by the warmth and affection of family, bringing endless joy to those who held him close. His gentle spirit was evident in his love for nursing and being swaddled, finding comfort in the tender embrace of his loved ones. Sawyer's laughter was a melody of pure happiness, especially when tickled, and his eyes radiated curiosity and delight as he sat up cooing at his siblings and parents. No one could resist smiling back at Sawyer, for he had a gift for brightening the day of everyone he encountered.
In passing, Sawyer became a beacon of hope for others. On October 16, 2025, thanks to his selfless donation, two other babies received life-saving heart surgeries. Sawyer will forever be marked as a transplant hero, ensuring that his spirit will live on in the lives he helped save.
The community is invited to celebrate Sawyer’s life on Tuesday, October 21st, at Hope Lutheran Church, located at 6308 Quivira Rd., Shawnee, KS 66216. Visitation will be held from 4-5 pm, followed by a funeral service from 5-5:45 pm. A dinner in Concord Hall will follow, where family and friends can gather to share memories and find solace in one another.
Though Sawyer’s time with us was short, his impact is timeless. He reminded us all of the power of love, the importance of laughter, and the enduring strength found in the smallest and newest among us. Sawyer will forever be cherished in our hearts.
