Joan Lois Wilson, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, at the age of 88, in Shawnee, Kansas. Born on February 5, 1938, in Kansas City, Kansas, she lived a full and vibrant life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Joan's career began as a switchboard operator, where she honed her skills in communication and service. She later pursued her passion for exploration as a travel agent and tour guide, helping others discover the joy and wonder of travel. Her professional journey was marked by dedication and a genuine desire to connect with people from all walks of life.
Beyond her work, Joan had a wide array of interests that brought joy to her and those around her. She found solace in gardening, enjoyed the great outdoors while camping, and delighted in the excitement of travel. Joan was known for her flair in shopping for clothes and home decorating, always creating welcoming spaces. Her warmth and hospitality extended to entertaining friends and relatives, often gathering loved ones for card games or lively conversations.
She is fondly remembered by her surviving family members: her sister, Regina Hellebuyck; her nephews, Vincent T. Brown and Stephen A. Brown; her great nieces, Lindsey Hermanson and Allison Brown; and her great nephew, Benjamin Brown. Joan's legacy continues through her son, James E. Moore, her grandson, Patrick D. Moore, and his wife, Emily Moore, along with their children, Owen J. Moore and Esme Moore. Her granddaughter, Jessica E. Moore-Powell, and her husband, Dustin Powell, also cherish her memory with their daughters, Brooklyn Powell and Avery Powell.
Joan was preceded in death by her dear aunt, Regina Brewer; her brother, James McCleery; her father, Thomas McCleery; and her mother, Yolonda Fox.
The family will hold a service to honor Joan's life on May 21 at 5 PM at Amos Family Funeral Home, followed by a visitation from 6 to 8 PM. A burial will take place on Friday, May 22, at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 9 AM.
In remembrance of Joan Lois Wilson, we celebrate a life well-lived and a woman whose spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
