Joan Wendel

Joan F. (Whitman) Wendel, born on September 26, 1933, in Omaha, Nebraska, passed away peacefully of natural causes on August 24, 2026, in Olathe, Kansas, at the age of 92.

Joan lived an extraordinary life marked by her enduring love for her husband and family, and her dedication to community, and passions. A strong, intellectual, talented woman who made a profound difference in so many ways and in so many people's lives. If you were fortunate to become her friend, you were a friend for life. She was genuine, kind, and filled with positivity and encouragement. She sought out the simple joys of life, like having fun and sharing happiness. Her contributions and love to the community and to the City of Roeland Park, Kansas, where she resided for over 80 years, made it a better and brighter place to live.

She was the cherished wife of the late Bob Wendel, with whom she shared an idyllic loving relationship. Their enduring marriage of 69 years was filled with mutual respect, admiration and devotion. Together, they built a beautiful family rooted in love and resilience.

A woman of many talents, Joan's career spanned several roles including schoolteacher, real estate agent, and serving as a two-term Mayor of Roeland Park, Kansas. Her commitment to public service and leadership left an indelible mark on her community. Joan's philanthropic spirit shone brightly through her involvement with the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, spanning numerous roles at the collegiate, alumni and national sorority levels. As well as, years of involvement with school, education and church.

In addition to her professional achievements, Joan was a passionate philanthropist, avid reader, and gardener. These interests brought her many joys and were a source of inspiration to all.

Preceded in death by her husband, Bob Wendel, her parents Mandy and Frank Whitman, and grandsons David and Scott Waddell. Joan treasured her family above all else. She is survived by her family, who will forever cherish her love and memory: her daughter Laurie and son-in-law Donn James, her daughter Buffy (Sherris) and son-in-law Erick Kadel, her son Bob Wendel III, her daughter Jody Wendel, son Bill Wendel and sister-in-law Barbara (Wendel) Lujin. Joan was blessed with 5 children, 11 cherished grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren, who will all continue to celebrate her legacy of love, kindness and service.

Joan gave an abundance to her community, touching many lives with her warmth and generosity. Her beautiful spirit for life will be carried on by the friends and family who loved her dearly.

Services to celebrate Joan's remarkable life will be held at Villa St. Francis Catholic Care Center, 16600 W. 126th St., Olathe, KS 66062, with a viewing beginning at 9am, a service at 10am followed by a graveside burial at Grantville Cemetery, 2702 Detlor Road, Grantville, KS 66429.

Joan is the joy, the sunshine and everlasting love that will live in the hearts of many.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Villa St. Francis Bingo Fund or a charity of your choice in memory of Joan, a woman whose life was a testament to the power of giving back.
