James Michael Smith, known to most as Jim, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, at the Olathe Hospice House at the age of 80.
Born to Nick and Ann Smith on August 28, 1945, Jim built a life defined by hard work, curiosity, and independence. He graduated from De La Salle High School and attended Donnelly College, where he discovered his interest in accounting and finance.
Jim began his career at Security National Bank, working his way up to loan officer. During the Vietnam era, Jim enlisted and served in the Air Force Reserves. He later joined NCR, selling mainframe computers across the region, and then Zenith, where he embraced the emerging world of personal computers. Eventually, he followed his entrepreneurial spirit, running his own business selling landscape equipment.
In August 1972, Jim married Georgia, his grade school friend and lifelong partner. Their 53 loving years together were a steady and meaningful part of his life.
Outside of work, Jim found his greatest enjoyment in simple, quiet pursuits—trout fishing, fly tying, hunting, and golf. He also had a fondness for collecting bears with Georgia and later took an interest in commercial real estate.
In retirement, Jim became a member of the American Legion Olathe Chapter, where he took pride in serving with the Honor Guard and honoring his country.
He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his independent nature, and his deep appreciation for the outdoors.
A service to honor Jim's life will be held on Friday, May 8th, 2026 at 11:00am at the American Legion Post 153 in Olathe, Kansas. Please come to celebrate Jim and a life very well lived.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Legion or the Olathe Hospice House where he finally found rest.
