James (Jim) Donaghy, 72, a kind and gentle man, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on June 25, 2026, at his Shawnee, KS, home with beloved family by his side. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, Jim welcomed life with open arms and passion. Whether taking family dog walks, doing home remodeling, creating landscape artistry, fabricating smokers, riding his motorcycle (younger days), doing service projects, or reading fiction intrigue novels, Jim possessed a sense of humor that matched his sense of purpose.

Born on March 5, 1954, in Bryn Mawr, PA, Jim described himself as industrious, independent, and fun loving during his teen years. These attributes contributed to his successful career in the welding and industrial gas industry along with being a welding educator. After graduating high school in 1973, he became a pipe fitter and discovered his gift and passion for welding, consequently, excelling in his abilities. He then taught welding at WTTI where he learned code and became a CWI, certified welding inspector, which he maintained for 48 years. He applied his CWI skills at nuclear power plants during his tenure at United Engineers and Constructors. The next 20 years, which required a move to O’Fallon, MO, Jim provided sales support for several industrial gas companies where he specialized in unique gas mixes for welding. He was pleased to receive MG’s top achievement award receiving a 7-day Caribbean cruise. He was respected for his integrity, knowledge, and problem-solving skills.

2005 brought a move to Shawnee, KS, and a teaching position at Johnson County Community College working as a Welder Trainer for BNSF railroad. He enjoyed teaching and was honored to receive the JCCC/BNSF Railway Faculty Achievement Award in 2015. He is remembered for his patience, positivity, and willingness to help. In 2019, Jim retired but continued to teach JCCC’s non-credit welding classes, along with providing welder certifications for the college.

In retirement, Jim spent as much time as possible at his vacation home at the Lake of the Ozarks, his cherished sanctuary. He was a gracious host enjoying his special visitors. Boating was new to him, so the special tips he received from his neighbor and friend were so helpful. Jim, also, just enjoyed reading a book on the deck watching nature. But, he still found projects to do at the Shawnee or lake house.

In 1976, Jim married Debbie McIlmoyle. Together they shared 49 years and 9 months of marriage. With the Lord as their constant, they raised three wonderful and talented children – Chris, Kyle, and Kelly. Jim loved his family more than anything and treasured every moment with them. His five grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He enjoyed it when the family shared yearly beach vacations and when they spent time at the lake. He loved sharing his little piece of heaven.

Jim is survived by the love of his life, Debbie; children Chris Donaghy (Erin), Kyle Donaghy (Samantha), Kelly Escobar (DJ); grandchildren Emrie and Lincoln Escobar, Cole and Brody Donaghy, and Madi Donaghy; his sibling Barbara D’Emilio; along with extended family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Eagle Donaghy, Jr. and Nancy Greer Donaghy.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate the life of a man who touched so many with his humor, quiet strength, and warmth. Jim fought a courageous 5+ year battle with pulmonary fibrosis, but it didn’t stop him from living to his fullest. He endured to the end and finished his race well.
