Gregory “Greg” Thomas Moats, age 73, was called home by Our Heavenly Father on July 10, 2026, in Laramie, Wyoming. Born on September 21, 1952, in Waterloo, Iowa, Greg lived a life where his faith, his love of family, and his call to serve others guided him.

One of Greg’s most beloved roles was his service as a Marine. He proudly served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, and throughout his life he held to the values of honor, courage, and commitment.

Following his miliary service, he ventured into various professional roles, including as a Salesman for Bianci Leather and later as a sponsor and sought-after instructor for Dale Carnegie Training. His career culminated as the Marketing Director for Magnum Products.

A devout follower of our Lord Jesus Christ, Greg lived his life with unwavering faith and integrity. His commitment to his faith was seen throughout his life, especially in how he valued his family. He was most proud of his role as a father and grandfather.

His interests were as varies as they were deep, encompassing everything gun-related – from competitive shooting to instructing those new to the sport and directing church security. Hosting shooting classes with noted instructors on his gun range brought him greatest satisfaction. A lover of history and an avid reader, Greg also found joy in visiting Western art museums, traveling, exploring, and hunting.

Greg was a respected member of the Laramie Trap Club and numerous other gun clubs. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and associated with The Shootists, Team Kansas, and NRA Whittington Center. His expertise and passion for shooting earned him the status of Master Class Sporting Clays Shooter, and he shared his insights and wisdom as a noted gun magazine writer. Gunsite Academy was a favorite destination for his own personal shooting instruction. Greg also contributed to the Cooper Legacy Foundation as the editor of their online presence and will always be remembered for his love of shooting.

When the people who love Greg think of him now, they will think of a storyteller. Greg had such a way with words and was able to bring to life every story he shared. Puns and play-on-words colored his conversation and stories. He will live on through these stories as well as his laughter, and his faith.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John E. Moats and Normalee Moats, and his wife, Carla Jean Moats. Greg’s legacy continues through his surviving family: his loving wife, Charlotte Moats; his son, Travis Moats, with wife Kristin and their children Emery, Elsie, and Teddy; his daughter, Loralee Collum, with husband Jon and their children Colton and Cami; his stepson, Jeff Miller, with his wife Maren and their children EmJ and Luke; and his stepdaughter, Stacey Miller, with partner Mark Wolf.

Services honoring Greg’s life will be held at Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee, Kansas. Visitation will be Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a service at 10:30 AM. Greg will be laid to rest with military honors at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 12:30 PM.

Greg Moats leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and faith. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
