Franz Scholz, 96, of Shawnee, Kansas passed away June 19, 2026.
Franz was born on November 30, 1929, in Schweinsdorf, Germany, to Marie and Franz Johann Scholz. Franz learned to be a baker by trade and worked in the neighboring town of Neustadt. In his teenage years, he was forced to leave his home due to the Russian invasion during World War II, after which he settled in Bavaria, Germany, continuing to work as a baker. After several years he was reunited with his family through the Red Cross and moved to Bűhren, Germany.
Franz met his future wife Gertrude Franzkoviak while living in Bűhren. In 1951 he immigrated to the United States as a displaced person traveling by military ship from Germany to New Orleans and then to Kansas City, where he settled. Gertrude immigrated to the U.S. in 1952 via Ellis Island, New York, joining Franz in Kansas City. Franz worked as a baker in the Kansas City area, retiring at age 65. He liked spending time at his lake property at Sugar Valley Lakes, where he enjoyed playing golf, fishing and just relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of the city. He also enjoyed making and decorating cakes for friends and family throughout his career and continued even after he retired.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude and his grandson Christopher. He is survived by his son Franz Norman (Marsha) Scholz, Roeland Park, Kansas; son Edward John (Kay) Scholz, Shawnee, Kansas; and son Ronald Josef (Kristin) Scholz, Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren Erika Gundelfinger, Shaunna Mallow, Bremen and Brenna Scholz, Hannah Cordes, Emma and Ryan Harding and great-grandchildren Peyton and Stella Mallow, Madison and Conner Gundelfinger and Remi Cordes.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00am, Thursday, June 25, 2026 at the Amos Family Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at 10:00am. Franz will be laid to rest next to his wife at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions in Franz's name be made to a charity of your choice.
