With profound sadness and deep appreciation for a life defined by love, strength, and service, we announce the passing of Donald L. Ulery, a devoted husband, proud father, beloved father-in-law, cherished “Papa,” and a proud Vietnam veteran.
Donald was born on October 8, 1943, to Ernest and Bavata “Betty” (née Spitzenberger) Ulery. He served his country honorably as an Army Sergeant (E-5) during the Vietnam War. His time in the military reflected the very core of who he was—a man of courage, discipline, and unwavering dedication. He carried those values with him throughout his life, shaping the way he worked, loved, and showed up for others.
In October 1982, Donald married his best friend and the love of his life, Sharon. Together, they built a life rooted in love, partnership, and unwavering support—a bond that stood as an example to all who knew them.
At home, Donald was the glue that held his family together. Known for his tremendous work ethic, he led by example—demonstrating commitment, resilience, and integrity in everything he did. He was a loving husband who stood steadfast beside Sharon, and a devoted father who guided with strength and heart. In one of life’s greatest acts of love, he stepped up to another man’s place, embracing fatherhood fully and selflessly, proving that family is built on love, not just blood.
As a father-in-law and “Papa,” Donald’s presence was a true gift. He offered wisdom, humor, and unwavering support, creating a foundation of love that will carry on for generations. He had a special way of showing his love—always making sure his grandchildren had a little spending money in their pockets, a simple gesture they will forever remember as a symbol of his generosity and care.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Ulery; his children, Chad (Jennifer) Hignite of Lenexa, Kansas, and Aly (Brian) Kristensen of Shawnee, Kansas; his grandchildren, Emma Dixon, Braedyn (Helen), Kaija, Carys, and Brynlee Kristensen, and Miles and Maysen Hignite; his great-grandchildren, Stella and Nora; and his siblings, Larry Ulery (Topeka), Jenetta Ulery-Anderson (Olathe), and Betty Jo Ulery-Crome (Louisburg), as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Bavata “Betty” Ulery, and his siblings, James “Irvin” Ulery and Wilma Ulery-Kerr.
Those who knew Donald will remember his strength of character, his tireless work ethic, and the deep love he had for his family. He didn’t seek recognition—he simply showed up every day and gave his all. That quiet, steadfast devotion is the legacy he leaves behind.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered in the lives he touched and the family he so lovingly held together.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday April 12, 2026 at 2:00pm at the Town Square Events in Paola, KS. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
