Delona Deane (Gorrell) Potter, age 65, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026. Born on October 20, 1960, in Sedalia, Missouri, Delona's life was a testament to love, dedication, and the profound impact one person can have on countless lives.
A proud graduate of Sedalia Smith-Cotton High School in 1979, Delona earned varsity letters in volleyball and basketball. Her passion for sports continued at State Fair Community College, where she secured an Associate of Arts degree in 1981 while excelling in volleyball and serving as yearbook editor. Delona furthered her education with a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Arts Management from Central Missouri State University in 1984.
Delona dedicated a decade to the graphic arts industry as a talented graphic artist and estimator. In 2008, she found her true calling as an Educational Assistant in the Math Department at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School. There, she inspired both students and colleagues with her unwavering commitment and kind spirit.
Delona's greatest joy was her family. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she cherished every moment spent with her loved ones. Whether it was traveling, attending sporting events, or enjoying time at the lake, her family was always her top priority. She and her husband, Jeffrey Scott Potter, married on November 9, 1985, shared a beautiful life together, filled with love and adventure.
Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family. Known as a second mom by many, Delona's home was always open to friends and family. Her big heart was evident in her volunteer work, organizing soccer tournaments, supporting school activities, and being an active member of the Shawnee Mission West Soccer Booster Club.
Delona was also known for her love of sports, playing softball and volleyball into adulthood and coaching her daughter's teams. She took great pleasure in her close-knit circle of friends, especially during lively bingo nights.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Larry Gorrell and Myrna (Case) Gorrell; father-in-law, Laurel (Larry) Dean Potter; sister-in-law, Lee Ann (Wheeler) Potter; and cousin, Jeffrey Utt. Delona is survived by her devoted husband, Jeffrey; her son, Eric Scott Potter, and daughter-in-law, Erin; her daughter, Lindsey Michelle (Potter) Nitchals, and son-in-law, Luke; and her beloved grandchildren, Oliver, Penny, and Benjamin. She is also survived by her sister, Darcia Koetting (Jeff); her mother-in-law, Betty Potter; brother-in-law, Mike Potter; sisters-in-law, Cindy Goldsberry (Carter) and Liz Potter; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and countless friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Amos Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS 66203. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the same location. Delona will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa.
