Daryl Ray Halbin

Daryl was a man of quiet strength, kindness, humor, and an extraordinary ability to fix just about anything.

Reserved by nature, Daryl might not have been the first person to speak in a room, but once you got to know him, the stories—and conversation—could go on for hours. He had a wonderful sense of humor, an active imagination, and a gift for storytelling, especially when the children were young.

Daryl inherited his father’s strong work ethic and his mother’s gentle heart. He believed that if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing right—and finishing. Whether it involved home repair, electrical work, maintenance, or a problem no one else quite knew how to solve, Daryl could figure it out. He was resourceful, patient, and remarkably talented with his hands. More importantly, he shared what he knew. He was a teacher in the truest sense, always willing to show someone how something worked or help them learn to do it themselves.

That spirit carried into his work in real estate. Daryl managed and cared for many properties, handling every aspect himself. But the properties were never simply buildings to him. He cared about the people who lived in them. He worked with his tenants, helped when people were struggling, and took pride in providing good, affordable homes. Many of his tenants came to know and love him not only as their landlord, but as someone they could count on.

Daryl loved sports. He played hockey, volleyball, softball and was an avid football fan, especially when it came to his Kansas City Chiefs. Fantasy football was serious business in the Halbin household. Daryl studied the players, prepared for the draft, played for many seasons, and even served as commissioner. He was a KU basketball fan too, he rarely missed a game. He was a very avid board game player with a specialty in Monopoly, of course!

Music was another lifelong love. His tastes stretched across generations and genres—from George Strait and Garth Brooks to Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, Elvis Presley, Kansas, Journey, the Beatles and Fleetwood Mac. Daryl had a good singing voice, although he didn't show it off often.

He also had a playful side that began early. As a boy, his imagination could turn an ordinary room into a wrestling ring his iron claw took on the front door, the door lost! His Elvis performance and mean air guitar performance led to an unfortunate encounter with the family television. That imagination and sense of fun stayed with him throughout his life.

Family was an important part of Daryl’s life. He loved all of his siblings, nieces, and nephews and shared a particularly close bond with his twin sister, Karol. That special twin connection remained throughout their lives, and Karol and her family were a constant part of Daryl and Jackie’s life together. There were vacations, cookouts, birthdays, holidays, weddings and countless family gatherings over the years. Daryl might grumble a little about having somewhere else to go, but more often than not, once he got there, he was one of the last to leave.

As a father, Daryl gave Whitney many of the same gifts that defined his own life. He taught her to be resourceful, to work hard, to finish what she started and to understand the importance of her education. But he also made sure she knew he was behind her. Whether it was soccer, Girl

Scouts, art or whatever new interest came along, Daryl supported her and encouraged her to find her own way. He didn't need her to become just like him; he helped give her the tools and confidence to become herself.

And then came another title he treasured: Papa. To his four-year-old grandson, Dusty, Daryl was simply Papa—a name that carried its own special place in his life and in his heart. Their time together was far too short, but Dusty will grow up knowing who his Papa was through the stories, memories and love of the family who knew him best.

Daryl loved traveling, but with him the destination was only part of the adventure. He had a way of finding an interesting place to stop, something unexpected to see, or a way to make a long drive more enjoyable. The trips became memories we still talk about today.

Perhaps one of Daryl’s greatest gifts was the way he quietly helped others become stronger. Daryl was kind to everyone. He didn't need recognition for the things he did for others. He simply saw something that needed to be done and did it, saw someone who needed help and helped them, or found something broken and made it work again.

There are some people whose impact cannot be measured by titles or accomplishments. It is measured in the people they taught, the homes they cared for, the problems they solved, the stories they told, the laughter they created, the family they loved, and the countless lives they made a little better.

That was Daryl.

Daryl is survived by his wife, Jackie; his daughter, Whitney (Glen, Dusty); his twin sister, Karol (Randy, beloved friend and brother-in-law), and her family Addie (Kenedi, Kody), Aimee (Gary, Raegan, Vincent, Grant), Jera, Emily (Al), Renae (Corey, Lorelei, Leona), Cheryl (Michael, Jared, Ramie, Elliot, Audrie), Anthony, (Kaden, Emery), Allie (Steve, Judah, Noah), Eric (Kayla Kylie, Laila, Levi), Dennis (Marc), Jerry and extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.

Daryl was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Addie, as well as his brother Gene.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a service at 3:00 p.m. at Amos Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas 66203.
