Bert Bone

September 10, 1923 — April 8, 2024

Bertram T Bone, 100, died peacefully April 8, 2024. Bertram was born to Bertram and Marguerette (O’Brien) Bone on September 10, 1923 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Amazingly, he was both born and died on the day of a total solar eclipse in the US.

His childhood nickname used by his family was Mutt and his dog was named Pooch. His favorite sport was tennis which he played well into his 70’s. He graduated from Paseo High School in 1940, received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Kansas University in 1944. Bert served in the US Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant, Junior Grade on a submarine chaser from 1944-1946. He was training in San Diego for the landing in Japan when the war ended. He returned to the University of Kansas and graduated with an M.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1949. He worked for Phillips Petroleum Company starting in 1949 until he retired in 1985. He married Loretta I. Reist on August 18, 1951.

Bert is survived by his two sons, Russell Bone and wife Joyce, Bartlesville, OK; and Jeffrey Bone and wife Trixie, Georgetown, TX; grandsons, Steven, Brett, Kevin and Trent and great-grandson, Brooks. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Loretta Irene (Reist) Bone.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice or to the Ruth R. Black, Loretta R. Bone and Virginia R. Brickell Nursing Scholarship; University of Kansas Endowment, Box 928; Lawrence, KS 66044. There will be no formal services.
