Matthew Alan Landess

Matthew A. Landess, 34, of Bonner Springs, KS, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday September 14, 2019. 

 

Matthew was born on September 27, 1984 in St. Joseph, MO.  He graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest in 2003, where he played Quarterback on the varsity football team.  Matthew went on to play football as a quarterback at Butler County Community College in Eldorado, KS where they won the NJCAA National Championship in 2003 and eventually led the Missouri Western State University Griffons in St. Joseph, MO to the playoffs in 2007 for the first time in the school’s history.  Matthew completed his Bachelor of Business Management degree in 2008 and his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 2014 from Missouri Western State University.  Matthew worked as a Registered Nurse at North Kansas City Hospital where he received the prestigious Daisy Award for his clinical skills and patient advocacy.  In addition to playing football, Matthew played competitive baseball and also umpired the game for 3&2 Baseball for 15 years.  He loved to play guitar, write songs, and perform for friends and family. Matthew loved to play jokes on his friends and family while always laughing at his own antics.  He loved hanging out with all of his siblings and cousins, especially at big holiday gatherings.    He was a loving son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin and uncle.

 

Matthew is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Wayne Landess, paternal grandmother Dorrine Landess-Sollars, and paternal grandmother, Imo Lee.  Matthew is survived by his parents Terry Landess (Monica) and Debbie Hill (Ray).  He is also survived by his brothers, Jacob Bolin, Blake Hill and sisters, Megan Landess (Derek Smith); Mallory Seisser (Tim); Alex Hill (Chris Wank) and Hannah Hill.  Matthew also had a niece Ella Ray Wank.  Other survivors include his maternal grandparents Gary and Sylvia Summers and Debbie and Ray Hill, Sr. and paternal grandfather Jack Sollars. 

 

Visitation and Services

Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, September 20, at the Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee.  A celebration of Matthew’s life will follow at 3 p.m, casual dress is requested. 

Memorial Contributions

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Kansas City Football and Cheerleading, formerly FCCJC www.kcfootballcheer.org or to Missouri Western State University Football Scholarship Fund.

    Matt was a great young man that was taken way too soon! He was a wonderful student-athlete, a teammate to many, and a pleasure to know. While we didn’t see him much lately, I know he stayed close with our son, Matt. We cherish the times we spent with all of you during the football season at Missouri Western and beyond.

Please dont hold your feelings back it only makes it harder I cried through my sons funeral loud enough everyone heard but I didn’t care.
