Marilyn Yvonne Breneman

Born September 21, 1930 in Princeton, Missouri, Marilyn Yvonne Breneman passed away on September 12, 2020 at her residence in Leawood, Kansas.

Wife for 45 years to Rodney Dale Breneman of McPherson, KS (who preceded her in death c. 2002), a dedicated KSU Wildcat who she time and again referred to as “the man she knew she was going to marry”; cherished daughter to Arthur Eldon Hoover and Mary Alice Summers of Chillicothe, MO; loving Mother to three daughters—Tracie Shawn Breneman, Pennie Lynn Vasta (Joe), Julie Michele Gregory (Stephen); sweet Grandma to four grandchildren—Mollie of Kansas City, MO, Katie of Overland Park, KS, Madison (Jack) of Roeland Park, KS, and Mason of Air Force Academy, CO., it goes without saying the resume that is Marilyn’s life boasts an inspired and fulfilling journey most can only hope to emulate.

A flawless embodiment of the ideal family matriarch, Marilyn’s charm, strength and ability to balance motherhood, work and the like will be celebrated for generations to come. She was entertaining and inspiring, smart and sympathetic, hardworking and helpful, graceful and accomplished, capable and compassionate—a woman loved and admired by all with whom she crossed paths.

Marilyn was, among other accolades, a member of the Shawnee Historical Society and the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce.

An additional and undoubtable claim to fame was her idea to start a little fair. In 1975, as an extension of her co-managerial role alongside close friend Judy Owens at the Shawnee Trading Post, a tradition was born. The two ladies saw this idea come to fruition in the form of “Old Shawnee Days” which was and still is a popular arts and crafts fair hosted on an annual basis at historical Shawnee Town.

For all of her contributions to her community, she will forever be honored and memorialized as an iconic Shawnee personality. For those familiar with the grounds, her spirit will live on in the traditions she established. For her family, her positive light will continue to shine through.

Private services to be held Saturday, September 19, at The Amos Family Funeral Home & Crematory. For those unable to attend in person, Amos Family Funeral Home will be offering an alternative option to stream the service live on their Facebook page.

  1. Carol Langdon Says:

I worked with Marylin when she was the Assistant Manager at Lori’s Gifts. I will always remember her quick wit, wonderful personality and thinking about everyone else first and putting her needs last.

  2. Christine Schmitt Says:

I will always feel blessed to have been a part of Marilyn’s life. Her laughter and love for life brought me great joy. She truly is an example of what the Lord means when He says Well Done. Well done Marilyn! Save a place for me and one day I’ll join you and we will have another poker game, eat another buttermilk chocolate cake, or find hilarious birthday cards at Target. Is there a Target in heaven? If there is Marilyn will find it:) Until that time I will miss you my friend!
