Joan Marie (Oyer) Schlatman

Joan Marie Schlatman, died Feb 3, 2020 of Altzheimers

My darling intelligent ,wonderful wife  of 21 years, has left this world a better place. Her sense of humor and consideration of others was beautiful. She grew up in KCK, graduated from Wyandotte HS and Drury College.

She was 3rd grade teacher in Shawnee Ks. She married Tom Hicks and had two daughters, Christine Huffstutler and Ginger Hicks.  After they divorced, she worked at JRH Biosciences until her retirement. She loved her granddaughter Jessica Frye, her husband Wil Frye and great grandson, ‘TJ’ Frye. She enjoyed, socializing and was a marvelous Disco Dancer. She was the “Dancing Queen” and mostly a warm supportive wife.  She was preceded in death, now reunited with her father John W Oyer, her mother Edith “Eleanor” Oyer and her brother John G.“Johnny” Oyer.

Her 12-year struggle with this horrible disease was fought with grace and smiles for everyone. We want to thank the great nurses CNAs and others that took care of her all these years at Garden Terrace, The Forum, and all the wonderful people at ASCEND Hospice. They cared for Joan and me. My daughters Donna Ingram, and Sandy Archer will miss her love. Her faithful lifelong friends Diana Patterson and Carol Kimmich visited her often in the nursing homes. They are loved and appreciated.

    Mike and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss and want you to know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Losing a loved on is never an easy thing to go through. From my few meetings with Joan, I understood her to be a remarkable women with great spirit and passion for life. Remember the good time and the special moments of her being here on earth with us and know that she is now blessed in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

May her soul rest in peace.

  7. Scott Payne Says:

Joan and I were buddies at Wyandotte High School and at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Because of college and the Army I lost touch after high school and only two years ago learned of her affliction. She lives on in the treasure house of my memories, a beautiful girl with a wonderful smile and a giggly sense of humor. The first time I saw Carol Burnett on TV, I was convinced she had met and was copying Joan. I’m sorry she is gone, but having been through the Alzheimer agony with an in-law, I’m glad she’s at peace. Now all I can do is kick myself for failing to contact her years ago.
