Jim “Parrot” Carter

James David Carter passed away on January 8, 2018, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018. A short visitation will be held prior to a 9:30 a.m. Rosary at the temporary facilities of St. Joseph Church in the Early Education Center (11525 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas).

Jim was born June 1, 1955 to Robert and Kathryn (Horan) Carter, who preceded Jim in death. Jim was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shawnee, Kansas. Jim attended and graduated from St. Joseph Grade and High Schools. Despite a notably tumultuous entrance on his first day of school, Jim had perfect attendance for thirteen years. Jim spent his entire working career with his brothers and cousin at Carter Glass Company. Jim was Secretary Treasurer and prided himself on diligently carrying out his corporate duties, working with family, suppliers, professional staff and employees. He counted many of the Carter Glass employees as his friends.

Even though Jim was not blessed with children of his own, he was generous with his time and treasures to his many nieces and nephews. They affectionately called him “Uncle Par-Par” (Parrot). He is survived by eight nephews, nine nieces, fifteen grandnephews, twenty grandnieces, and one great grandnephew. He was predeceased by one niece.

Jim is survived by five brothers and their wives, Jack (Cecilia), Bob (Joan), Terry (Sue), Bill (Charlene) and Tom (Jan). Jim is also survived by his companion of many years Alta Burd and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who considered Jim a grandpa. He was especially close to all of his cousins in the Cook family.

We will miss receiving Parrot’s emails and posts espousing his Ron Paul Revolution and “Make America Great Again” positions; and, we’ll miss his unique way of phrasing his positions known affectionately as “Dutchisms.” We are saying goodbye for now to a loyal, honest and humble brother, uncle and friend. May we be reunited with Jim in eternal life with Christ our Lord.

  1. bill carter Says:

Parrot will be missed by all and especially myself. He was the most selfless person I have ever met, always considerate of others in every respect. His total loyalty to family is next to no one I’ve ever known. I consider it an honor to have been able to call him brother. My family will always remember his kind heart and love for each of them the rest of their days. I shall miss the bantering back and forth on issues of the day and your always contorted analogy that left me scratching my head trying to figure it out. So here’s to you my dear brother until we meet again, cheers, prost and salute to your new home surrounded in the glory of God.Love Bill & Charlene

  2. Jimmy Carter Says:

    Uncle Par Par,
We will miss you so much. It was an honor to share your name and I’ll always have the fondest memories of the sleepovers at your house as kids with my cousins (even though, in hindsight showing Nightmare on Elm Street to a six year old was probably not a good idea). Additionally, you shared a love of professional wrestling with us as kids that we’ve passed on to our kids and I’ll never forget the numerous pay per view events we’d watch at your house.

The willingness to drop everything and take care of Bobby and I when my Mom had her car accident was just one example of your loyalty and fierce love for your family. There are several other great memories to share and I know you’re in heaven now watching over all of us. We’ll definitely miss you and we love you.
    Jimmy, Brittany and Family

  3. Patrick Carter Says:

Uncle Parpar was larger than life to me as a child. As I grew older, and I saw him less, I never for a second doubted that he loved me, and would be there if I needed him. You could always count on Uncle Parpar.
I was lucky to have an Uncle like him.
Rest in Peace Uncle Parpar. We love you, and will miss you.
    Pat, Trish, Eli and Katy.

  4. Mike Van Walleghem Says:

I remember the first day of school. You went to early buddie.
    Until we meet again!

  5. Vazquez Family Says:

Uncle Parpar you will be greatly missed. You were a generous person in so many ways. We always could count on you remembering us on our birthday or wishing us a Merry Christmas. You made sure to let your family know you were thinking of them and i will always remember how special that was. As kids my Dad would tell us great “Parrot” stories that always had us in stitches and continue to do so. Those childhood memories are now being carried on by my Dad to my children, which they love hearing and are huge fans of. I will always regret not getting to see you or getting the chance to say goodbye. You will always be in our hearts and prayers and remembered as the wonderful person you were. We were blessed to have you as an Uncle. I am sure you were greeted by Nana and Papa in heaven and are so glad to be home again with them.
