James (Jim) Burris

September 17, 2011

James Joseph (Jim) Burris, 75, died September 17, 2011, of Legionnaires Disease at the Shawnee Medical Center. 

 

Jim was born in Nevada, Missouri, June 19, 1936.  He graduated from Silver Lake High School and served in the U. S. Army.  He trained at Brooks Army Medical Center as an x-ray technician.  He graduated from Johnson County Community College and attended Kansas University. 

 

Before retirement, Jim was employed by Bethany Medical Center and Trinity Lutheran Hospital.  He was a member of the Post 327 American Legion in Shawnee, where until recently he served as Commander.  He also was a Shriner, Mason and member of the Eagles. 

 

Jim was a country boy who moved to the city, but never lost his love of an active life in the outdoors.   He was an avid hunter and fisherman and shared adventures as far away as Canada, Mexico and Alaska.  He was devoted to his grandchildren and loved spending time with them.  He will be greatly missed by friends and family who knew him for his hard work, sense of humor, determination, and generosity.  

 

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Velma, of the home; his children: Doug Burris and wife Julie of St.Louis, Julie Rathjen and husband Mike of Overland Park; grandchildren Sydney, Emily, Mia, Ashton and Lawson; brothers Don Burris of Birmingham, Alabama, Carl Burris of Port Orchard, Washington; and sister Susan Garton of Anchorage, Alaska; and many nephews and nieces, including, Dennis Gibson and Robin Goebel.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Francis Burris, and his brother, Jack Burris. 

 

The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation 50 Crestwood Executive, Suite 401 St. Louis, Missouri 63126. 

 

Visitation and Services

 

The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, September 18, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.  A Celebration of Jim’s life will be 10 a.m., Monday September 19, 2011, at the chapel.  A private family committal service will be held at a later date.   

Dan K. Miller

September 17, 2011

Dan K. Miller, 70, of Rupert, Idaho, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2011, at Delmar Gardens of Lenexa. 

 

Dan was born November 5, 1940, to the late William Jr. and Flora Miller in Louisville, Kentucky.  Dan was a heavy equipment operator for Western Farms near Rupert, Idaho, before retiring in 2005.   He also served as a volunteer fireman in Le Mars, Iowa, before he relocated to Idaho.  Dan was an avid outdoorsman.  He loved hunting and fishing.  Dan enjoyed working with his hands and had a small engine and saw sharpening service.  He had a great sense of humor and a generous heart, and could always be counted on by his neighbors if they ever needed a hand. 

 

Dan is preceded in death by his wife Barbara, and his brothers William Miller, III and Gordon Miller.  He is survived by his son Shannon Miller and wife Susan; two daughters, Amy Bergquist and husband Jon and Kim Mullally and husband Pat; stepchildren Raymond Beek and wife Belinda, and Jodi Wilson and husband Mike; two sisters Patsy and Mary Miller; a brother AJ Miller; 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

 

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64114.

A visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, September 18, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. 

Robert W. Tolman

September 16, 2011

Robert W. Tolman, 70, of Shawnee passed away Friday, September 16, 2011 at Shawnee Gardens.  

 

Robert was born November 1, 1940 to the late Leon and Esther Tolman in Fort Covington, New York.  Robert earned an Associates Degree from the University of New York.  On July 11, 1964 he married Jane Moore in Mansfield, Ohio.

 

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Jane; three sons, Frederick Tolman and wife Maureen, Albert Tolman and wife Beth,  Steven Tolman and wife Kristen; a sister, Pat Rubira; and seven grandchildren, Michael, Robbie, Melissa, Sarah, Matthew, Alexander, and Hunter. 

 

The family wants to express their sincere gratitude for the care and compassion that the EUR Staff at Shawnee Gardens and Catholic Community Hospice provided.  

 

Visitation and Services

 

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 11311 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas 66203.

Carl Edward Phillips

September 15, 2011

Carl Edward Phillips, 88, of Shawnee, Kansas, died on September 15, 2011, at his home.

 

Born in Pittsburg, Kansas, July 31st 1923.  Carl was loved and admired for his quick wit, his artistry, his wise way with words, his kindness, his generosity, his patience, his unbending honesty and integrity.  He attended High school in Sedalia, Missouri; and later, the Kansas City Art Institute. 

 

After marrying  in 1947, he started a career as a sign painter specializing in hand lettering, design and layout.  He was the owner of Merriam Signs until he retired in 1995. Even in retirement he continued to paint both professionally and as gifts for friends and loved ones.  He loved his work.

 

He had a lifelong love of fishing, and was an avid competitor at horseshoes and bowling, participating in league play at both until earlier this year.   

 

He served in World War II as a reconnaissance scout, venturing behind enemy lines to draw maps.  He survived the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of December 1944 – January 1945, earning a Bronze Star.  In 2010 he was recognized at the US Capital building in Washington, DC for his efforts in the liberation of the inmates at the Nazi prison camp at Dachau. 

 

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Donna; three daughters Christina Mingorance,  Jeanne Kay,  Catherine Phillips;  adopted sons Roy and Michael Dodson, and their spouses;  two sisters Marie McDermott and Betty Warmington; six grandchildren: Veronica Headley, Andrea Mingorance, Marco Mingorance, Whitney Kay, Casey Kay, and Michael Kay; and five great grandchildren.

As we reflect on the events of 10 years ago, may we always remember and cherish the freedoms that we enjoy as Americans.  No act of terrorism can break the spirit of this great nation.  Not now, or ever.  Be it Pearl Harbor or the World Trade Center, no one can take that spirit from us.  God bless Amerca!

Donald Edward Toevs

Donald Edward Toevs, 89, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away at Shawnee Mission Medical Center Friday, September 9, 2011 with his family by his side.

 

Donald was born in Newton, Kansas on April 20, 1922, to Henry and Elizabeth Toevs. He grew up in Newton, where he played high school basketball for the Newton Railroaders. It was in high school that he met the love of his life, his wife, Cora Ruth Adams. He went to Kansas State in 1941, where he played basketball for Jack Gardner. He joined the United States Navy after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Donald served his country for four years on the troop carrier U.S.S. Admiral W.S. Benson. While still in the Navy he married Ruth in 1944. After the Navy, Donald attended Wichita State University where he played basketball as captain of the team, and was voted the Most Valuable player his senior year. He went on to earn his Master’s degree in administration for the University of Kansas.

 

Donald was a true gentleman, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His first teaching assignment was in Iola, Kansas, where he also coached. Donald moved from Iola to teach in Kiowa, Kansas for one year. In 1956, Donald and Ruth moved to Kansas City, Kansas, where he taught and coached at Washington High School and Arrowhead Junior High. He became an administrator where he served at Lowell and Central Elementary, Northwest Junior High, and Coronado Junior High. Donald touched the lives of many students, teachers and athletes.

 

Donald’s sense of family was unmatched. He taught his children the appreciation of nature through camping, canoeing, hunting morel mushrooms, and gardening. Don and Ruth enjoyed traveling together to casinos, ocean fishing, and exploring the country, frequently with brothers and sisters, and his children. He and Ruth maintained contact with retired Washington High School staff and always enjoyed their get-togethers.

 

Donald was a member of the Masons. He served for many years on the board of directors for the Wyandotte Credit Union.

 

Donald was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ruth and two sisters, Marcella Throne and Judy Cox. He is survived by his children: Susan (Rod) Anderson, Nancy (Jim) Snowberg, Fred (Yandell) Toevs, Peggy (Jake) Hess, and Julie Gaunce; ten grandchildren: Richard, Andy, Candie, Jill, Samantha, Adam, Becca, Cole, Evan, Lane; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Roberta Swinehart and Betty Turman; and two brothers, Horace and Bruce.

 

The family suggests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be made to the American Heart Association, 6800 West 93rd Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66212-1461 and American Red Cross, 1600 Washington Boulevard, Kansas City, Kansas 66102.

Visitation will be 10-11 am, Tuesday, September 13, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. A celebration of Donald’s life will follow at 11:00 am, Tuesday at the chapel.

Virginia Lee Studyvin

September 7, 2011

Viginia Lee Studyvin, 86, Merriam, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at her home.

 

Virginia was born in Pittsburg, Kansas, to Charles H. and Nellie Williams. She was a 1943 graduate of Pittsburg High School. In 1945, Virginia married William E. Studyvin. Virginia was an expert doll maker and designer and collaborated with National Institute of American Doll Artist Elizabeth Brandon on many years of doll shows.

 

Virginia is survived by her husband, William E. Studyvin; daughter, Glenda Daly and her husband, John, Panama City, Florida; two sons, Charles Studyvin and wife, Caryn, Rolla, Missouri and Steve Studyvin, Merriam, Kansas; four grandchildren, Jennifer Candler, Brandon and Chase Daly and Laura Studyvin, and two great grandchildren, Hayden and Mason Candler.

Michael John Staab

September 6, 2011

Michael John Staab, 65, passed away on September 6, 2011, at University of Kansas Medical Center. 

 

Michael was born to John and Gladys Staab of Shawnee Mission, Kansas.  He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1963.  He graduated from Kansas State University in 1968 with a degree is Political Science.  Michael served in the US Army from 1968-1972.  Michael was a K-Mart store manager for over 30 years and retired in 2001.

 

Michael is survived by his three children from his marriage to Jacqueline Furbeck:  Travis Staab of Arizona, Katie (Chris) Folkerts of  Nebraska and Jared Staab of Nebraska; and grandchildren: Steven and Lily Staab of Arizona.  He is also survived by Kathy Moorhead his life partner of 9 years. 

 

The family suggests memorial contributions to Harvesters or K-State Civic Leadership Scholarship (800-432-1578).

A memorial service in Michael’s honor will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 10, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.

Barbara Ann Weber

September 4, 2011

Barbara A. (Hula) Weber, 87, passed away September 4, 2011 at Garden Terrace of Overland Park.    Barbara was born of Michael J. and Violet Gochenour Hula on June 19, 1924 in Plattsmouth, Neb. 

 

She married Joseph A Weber on February 21, 1946 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sedalia, MO and later that year moved to Overland Park, KS. 

 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Joe; her parents, Michael and Violet; sisters, Frances Simon, Jean Devaney, Agnes Simon; her brother, Richard; and her great-grandson, Daniel Weber. 

 

Barbara is remembered by her children, Dick (Marianne) Weber of Roeland Park, KS; Tom Weber of Carson, WA; Ron Weber (Rhonda) of Lenexa, KS; Diane Weber of Shawnee, KS; Dan (Kris) Weber of Shawnee, KS; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.  The family rejoices that Barb is with the Lord and is now at peace. 

 

The family wishes to thank the staff of Garden Terrace for their loving care and support of Barb during her last two years.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association Heart of America Chapter, 3846 W. 75 St., Prairie Village, KS 66208.

The rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m.  A short service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 9, at Amos Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 83rd and Quivira, in Lenexa, KS.

Atsede Bedada

Atsede Bedada, 82, of Shawnee, Kansas, died September 2, 2011, at her home.   She was born December 10, 1928, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

 

Surviving are daughters Aster Tezera of Shawnee, Kansas, Genet Tezera, Asegedech W. Amanuel, Melete Ghile of Olathe, Kansas, Yewubnesh Tezera, and Desta Tezera; and sons, Sissay Tezera, Amare Tezera,  Tilahun Tezera.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Sunday, September 4, 2011, at the Ethiopian Christian Fellowship Church with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, Shawnee, Kansas. Visitation will be 4 – 6 p.m., Saturday, September 3, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.
