John Louis Homola, 87, Clearwater, Florida, passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2011, at the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri.
John was born in Hamtramck, Michigan, to John and Mary Homola. He was a veteran of the US Air Force serving during WWII. He received his Masters Degree from GMI and was employed with General Motors until his retirement.
John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret Homola; two sons, Mark Homola, Baltimore, Maryland and Michael Homola and wife, Deborah, Olathe, Kansas; sister, Josephine Brown, Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Noah, Sven, Erik and Kaarin; and two great grandchildren, Gavin and Logan.
Services
No services are planned. Burial in the Bay Pines National Cemetery, St. Petersburg, Florida.
James “Danny” Cheesman

James “Danny” Cheesman, 91, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Monday, August 15, 2011, at the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri.
Danny was born in Kansas City, Kansas, to James and Susan Cheesman. He was a 1938 graduate of Ward High School. Danny joined the US Army Air Corp in 1940, where he attained the rank of Flight Officer in 1945. He was flight engineer on the B-29 Empire Express, flying 35 missions over Japan, the first crew to achieve this status. The crew received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Danny remained in contact with his crew until his death. His crew received a special citation at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Following WWII, Danny was introduced to Mary Crossland by his sister, Rita, who was dating Mary’s brother, Bill. They were married 6 months later in Kansas City, Kansas. Mary was also a graduate of Ward High School. Danny was a flight officer for Eastern Airlines, flying Super Constellations until his retirement. He and his wife, Mary started the Royal Palms Mobile Home Park in Homestead, Florida, with her sister and her husband, Harry and Millie Mills.
Danny was an avid golfer with two hole-in-one’s. One after he had developed macular degeneration. He was a marshal at Overland Park Public Golf Course. He was also a member of St. Andrew’s and Victory Hills Golf Clubs.
Danny was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary, in 1997 and sister, Mary Elizabeth Dean.
Survivors include his sister, Rita Marie Cheesman Crossland, Overland Park, Kansas; sister-in-law, Millie Sonnenschein; two brothers-in-law, Bill and George Crossland; eleven nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.

Visitation and Funeral Service
Visitation will be from 6-8 pm, Friday, August 19, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, where a Rosary will be recited. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am, Saturday, August 20, 2011, at the Church of the Holy Cross, Overland Park, Kansas; entombment in the Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum.

Laurie Adele Lawrence Moyer

Laurie Adele Lawrence Moyer, born December 6, 1956, in Rock Springs, Wyoming, passed away August 11, 2011, in Shawnee, Kansas.
After graduating as the 1975 Salutatorian of Warrensburg High School, Laurie attended Central Missouri State University, where she earned a B.S. in Secondary Education (English and Theater), a Master’s Degree in English and Drama and produced her first musical Annie’s Voice.
Laurie’s passion for musical theater took her to New York City where she met and married Harry H. Moyer on May 24, 1992. Their beloved son, Jacob, was born in 1999. Fond of children, Laurie became a foster parent and worked as a paraprofessional in the Shawnee Mission School District for 15 years.
She is survived by her husband and son; also by her parents Dr. Donald L. and Mildred (Bridgmon) Lawrence of Shawnee, Kansas; brothers, Matt (Paula Marinoni) Lawrence of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Eric (Shelly McNaughton) Lawrence of Olathe, Kansas; nephews, Ross, Evan, Troy, Kyle, Sean and niece, Sarah.

Richard W. McAlister, 84, Lenexa, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2011, at Lakeview Village Care Center in Lenexa, Kansas.
Richard was born to Thurley and Lois (Wakefield) McAlister in Atchison, Kansas. Richard graduated from Emporia State Teachers College and was employed by the Shawnee Mission School District as a science teacher from 1956-1989. Richard was a member of Shawnee United Methodist Church and was active in the men’s group and the choir.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jay, cousin Mike King. Survivors include his wife of 58 years Lois; one son Paul (RuthAnn) McAlister, Shawnee, Kansas; one grandson Evan; a cousin Phyllis (Larry) Reece, Riverside, Missouri; four nieces, Paula Crouse, Lawrence, Kansas, Karen Oberzan, Lawrence, Kansas, Marilyn (Mike) Amyx, Lawrence, Kansas, Ann (Alan) Fischoff, Cincinnati, Ohio; and a nephew, Jim Womeldorf, Montrose, Colorado.

Betty A. Findlay, 90, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away August 10, 2011.
Betty worked for Ford Motor Company for 35 years.
She is survived by her son Dr. Roger Findlay, his wife Flor Mariluz and daughter Karen Sofia, along with three other grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard Findlay and son John Albert Findlay.
Visitation and Funeral Service
A visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Friday, August 12, 2011, at the Merriam Christian Church, Merriam, Kansas. A funeral service will follow at 2 pm with burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

Mary J. Newkirk, 83, Shawnee, Kansas, passed away surrounded by her family on August 10, 2011, at Overland Park Regional Hospital.
Mary was born November 18, 1927, in Highland Park, Michigan, to William and Nettie Jenkin. She grew up in Highland Park and Carleton, Michigan, and graduated from Carleton High School in 1945.
She married George Newkirk on July 1, 1951, in Miami, Oklahoma. They lived in Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas, before moving to Shawnee in 1961. They became the parents of two children, David and Emily.
She volunteered for years at Shawnee Mission Medical Center until her health forced her to move to Shawnee Gardens in 2008. She had a lifelong passion of reading books and was a master at Jeopardy her favorite show. She enjoyed playing bingo and dominos at Shawnee Gardens with all her friends. She was a “fixture” in the front lobby and greeted everyone with her smile. Thanks to her very good friend Ken Fair of Overland Park she was able to attend the West Lenexa Seventh-Day Adventist Church every week where she made many more good friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother Nancy Jane; sisters, Emily, Jean, and Dorothy; her husband; daughter Emily; and son John. She is survived by her son David and wife Denise of Paola, Kansas; grandchildren, Stephanie Newkirk of Shawnee, Kansas, Nick, Haley, and Logan Newkirk of Paola, Kansas; brother David Jenkin and wife Peggy of Leo, Indiana; and sister Marjorie of Butler, Indiana.
Visitation and Graveside Service
A visitation will be from 3:00-5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 14, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 15, 2011, at Pleasant View Cemetery, 6100 Quivira Road, Shawnee, Kansas.

Rhoda Jean Daniels, 75, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away, August 9, 2011, at the Sweet Life of Shawnee.
Jean was born in Norwich, Kansas, and has lived in Shawnee for the last 45 years. She was an Administrative Coordinator for Commerce Savings/World Savings and retired in 2001. She was a member of Shawnee United Methodist Church.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Bill Fitz and a sister, Wilma Moore. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, William F. Daniels, of the home; a son Brad (Patty) Daniels, Shawnee, Kansas; four grandchildren, Justin, Cody, Mackenzie, and Carter Daniels; two sisters, Ida Marie Wayman, Wichita, Kansas, and Leona (Gary) Berry, Norwich, Kansas; a brother-in-law, Albert Moore, Wichita, Kansas and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Sweet Life and Odyssey Hospice for the wonderful care given to Jean.
