Ryan Charles Beavers

Ryan Charles Beavers, 22, of Springfield, Missouri, formerly of Lenexa, passed away, Thursday, July 21, 2011, in Springfield.

 

Ryan attended Good Shepherd School and graduated from Bishop Miege High School. He later attended Missouri State. Ryan loved sports, especially soccer and tennis.  He loved to hunt, play cards and spend time at the lake with friends.  He was also an avid K-State and Chiefs fan.

 

Ryan is survived by his mother and step-father, Mary and Mark Sasenick and sisters, Molly and Katie, Lenexa, Kansas; his father and step-mother, Larry and Missy Beavers and brothers, Cameron and Brandon, Springfield, Missouri; grandparents, Bob and Joanne Stephan, Kansas City, Kansas, Charlie and Leatha Beavers, Olathe, Kansas, Pat and Steve Sasenick, Overland Park, Kansas, and Bud and Sharon Stone, Fremont Hills, Missouri; a great-grandmother, Elsie Spangler, Wakeeney, Kansas, a great grand-father, Dean Stone, Springfield, Missouri and many, many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

 

Ryan – you were so loved and will be missed by so many.  We love you son!

The Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 W. 75th Street, Shawnee, Kansas 66216.   Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m., prior to the mass. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

Lola Mae Honn

Lola Mae Honn, 97, Kansas City, Kansas, passed away at home on Thursday, July 21, 2011.

 

Lola was preceded in death by three sisters Bertha Boyer, Kathrine Kanakares, Mary Brown, and one son Joseph Ivan Honn, 

 

Lola is survived by one daughter Barbara (Paul) Menninger, Alabama: a brother Nick Kanakares, Olathe, Kansas; 9 grandchildren, Debra Fox, Burbank, California, Steve (Betty) Cagle, Overland Park, Kansas, Christina Alonso, Kansas City, Kansas,  Beatrice Cagle, Lees Summit, Missouri, Robin Jones. Augusta, Georgia,  Bill (Pam ) Kansas City, Missouri, Tina (Kirt) Seely, Neola Iowa,  Wayne (Dana)   Honn, Lenexa, Kansas, Anna (Dean) Killpack, Neola, Iowa;  27 great-grandchildren and 18  great-great grandchildren.

Joan Marie Brody

Joan Marie Brody (born Joan Marie Corcoran and also known as Joan Nelson) was born in Newnan, Georgia, on June 27, 1954, to parents John Lewis Corcoran and Victoria J. Corcoran. She grew up in Tyler, Texas, where she attended Robert E. Lee High School. After graduating with a degree in nursing from the University of Texas at Austin, she went on to become one of the first generation of nurse practitioners in the United States.

 

Through the Master’s degree she earned at the University of Kansas and years of practice in the Kansas City area, she contributed to the development of the pediatric nursing profession and directly improved the lives of thousands of children and families. Her most recent employer was Cass County Pediatrics in Belton, Missouri. She also enjoyed painting, interior design, and the arts.

 

Joan is survived by her children Andrew Lawrence Nelson and Jennifer Elaine Nelson; siblings Kathleen Ann Martin, John Thomas Corcoran, and Lauren Elizabeth Henkhaus; and her mother, Victoria.  All who knew her would attest of the great love and devotion she showed her children and family in good times and bad.

Floyd Taylor Smith

Floyd T. Smith, 82, Shawnee, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

 

Floyd was a sergeant in the United States Marin Corps 1947-1952 and served during the Korean War. Following the war he returned to Kansas City area and found employment with the Black and Veatch Company where he retired in 1993 after 38 years of service. During his employment Floyd joined the American Legion Post #327 and served the post with various offices from the 1990’s through current and including District Commander.

 

Floyd was preceded in death by his wife Helen Smith and a grandson Ronnie Bess.  Survivors include his partner Percilla Fleek of the home; one son Okey (Jeri) Bess, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Christy (Philip) Heath, Dallas, Texas and  Brandon (Kela) Bess, Melvern, Arkansas; and one great grandchild, Damon Heath.

Scott Daniel Carpenter

Scott Daniel Carpenter, 49, of Shawnee, Kansas, died on July 18, 2011, at his home.

 

Scott was employed by Landrum & Brown as a Senior Project Manager at the time of his passing. Scott is a graduate of DeVry Institute of Technology.  He was a member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering, Air Traffic Control Association, Mid-America MENSA, FAA’s Aviation Environment Design Tool and a past member of FAA’s INM and NIRS Design Review Groups.  Along with Scott’s memberships he was also a speaker for UC Davis Noise & Air Quality Symposium in 2007  and 2010;  he was an instructor for ACC NEPA Short Course 2003, Airspace Redesign Noise Assessment Models and for FAA Air Traffic Environmental Symposium 2003 and 2008.  

 

Scott enjoyed exercising, riding bikes and following sports.  He was an avid reader, enjoyed working on his 1973 Jaguar XJ V12, and spending time with his nieces.  A loving brother, uncle and friend whose generosity is hard to measure.

 

Scott was preceded in death by his parents Audrey and Elmer Carpenter. Survivors include a sister Amy (George) Bowers, Shawnee, Kansas; two nieces Caroline Rose and Lilly Jane Bowers; as well as other extended family and friends.

Lawrence Richard Straight

Larry Straight, 71, of Shawnee passed away Thursday, July 14, 2011, at his home. 

 

Larry was born October 5, 1939, in Kansas City, Missouri.  Larry graduated from Washington High School in 1957.  He served as a Military Policeman in the United States Army at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, from 1960 to 1962.  Larry met his bride Sondra on a blind date in 1957.  They were married on November 10, 1962, in Bonner Springs, Kansas.  Larry worked for Harcross Chemicals for over 35 years before retiring in 2002. 

 

Larry enjoyed spending time tending to his garden as well as canning and pickling the fruits of his labor.  He was a skilled craftsman at woodworking, and enjoyed making functional everyday items for his family and friends.  Larry also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles with his cats across his lap and playing games on the floor with his grandchildren.  His fondest memories are of vacationing with his family in Colorado.  Larry always put the needs of his family and friends before himself. 

 

He is preceded in death by his parents Ed and Imogene Straight, his biological father, Claude Hamlett; and sisters Barbara Snyder and Linda Hamlett.  Larry is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Sondra; his two daughters, Lari Ann Collins and husband Col. Thomas Collins, Sheri Knight; a son, Chris Straight, and wife Sarah; two granddaughters, Sophia Straight and Malia Knight; a grandson, Coleman Straight; brothers, Ed “Bud“ Straight and Kim Hamlett; sisters, Virginia Goodell, Claudia Schendel and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

 

He will be dearly missed.   

 

Visitation and Funeral Service

 

Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, July 17, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m.

Louis (Lefty) Urban

Louis (Lefty) Urban, 81 of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away July 12, 2011. 

 

Louis was preceded in death by his parents Alois and Dorothy Urban, a brother Elmo Urban, and a sister Lioba Sanders.  He is survived by his wife of 54 years Mary Urban; daughters Patricia Dennis (Tom) and Debora Solar (Rick); son Dale Urban (Mary); grandchildren, Julie Dennis, Rebecca Brockschink (Rob), John Solar, Steven Solar, Joe Solar, Kyle Urban, David Urban;  step-granddaughter Julie Cundy (Chris); step-great-grandsons Evan and Will Cundy; brother LeRoy Urban of Kansas City,  sister Lenora Stremel, of Hutchinson, Kansas; and sister-in-law Mary Urban of Dayton, Texas.

Robert Evans Coyle

Robert Evans Coyle, 84, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away at Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 12, 2011.

 

Bob was born on February 20, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Clifford and Inez Coyle.  He graduated from Sulfur Springs, Arkansas High School.  Bob was a World War II Veteran.  He served on Adak Island in Alaska.

 

Bob married the love of his life, Vera Louise Millard at First Christian Church in Emporia, Kansas, on September 17, 1950. They met at Commander-Larabee Milling Company in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

He began his career in insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield and retired from Supermarket Insurance Agency of Associated Wholesale Grocers in 1992.

 

Bob was an active member of Countryside Christian Church for over 50 years.  He was active in the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.  Bob was Master of Shawnee Masonic Lodge #54 in 1967.  He was active in Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years.  Bob was Past Worthy Patron of Beatrice Chapter #450 in Shawnee, Kansas.  He was active in the American Legion Post #370 in Overland Park for more than 30 years, and the Auxillary to secure college scholarships for Veterans’ children.  Bob was an active member of Milburn Country Club for over 20 years.  He loved playing golf with his friends at Milburn.  He shot six holes in one over the years across the country. He also enjoyed playing gin, hunting, and fishing.  He and Vera traveled extensively.

 

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Dick and Joe.  He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vera; son, Mike, married to Susan of Shawnee, Kansas; one grandchild, Mary, married to John King of Roeland Park, Kansas; and several nephews and nieces.

 

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Trinity Nursing and Rehab Center, and Kansas City Hospice House staffs for their compassionate care. 

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Masonic Scholarship Fund, Kansas City Hospice House, or the charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 15, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee on July 15, 2011.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the services.  Inurnment will follow at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
