Codyne J. McDonald

Codyne J. McDonald, 86, longtime Linwood resident passed away Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Hillside Village in DeSoto, Kansas. 

 

Codyne was born at the family farm in Moravia, Iowa, to the late Cody and Grace Luse.  She graduated from Simpson College with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.  Codyne married George McDonald on October 29, 1949.  George preceded her in death on November 8, 1989 after 40 years of marriage. 

 

Codyne was a member of the First Baptist Church of Linwood.  She enjoyed volunteering with Vacation Bible School and was known affectionately as “The Cookie Lady”. She also volunteered her time at Providence Medical Center. 

 

Codyne is survived by her two daughters, Roberta J. Denney and husband Jesse and Barbara Stringer and husband Randy; a son Michael C. McDonald; favorite family pet, C-Lo; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

 

The family suggests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be made to First Baptist Church of Linwood, 205 W. 3rd Street, Linwood, Kansas 66052.

 

Visitation and Funeral Service

 

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, August 4, 2011, at the First Baptist Church of Linwood.  Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Friday, August 5, 2011, at the church with burial following at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, Overland Park, Kansas.

Susan Elizabeth Rose

Susan Elizabeth Rose, 61, Lawrence, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly July 30, 2011.

 

Born to Robert and Dorothy (Glaettli) Rose in Madison, Wisconsin, on November 5, 1949, Susan was the fourth of seven children. She grew up in Lenexa, Kansas, graduating from Shawnee Mission West High School in 1967. After attending Kansas State University for two years, Susan graduated from Research Hospital School of Nursing in 1972. For many years, she was an obstetrics nurse in the area. The families she worked with often spoke of her compassion and calm. By far, her most grateful patient is daughter Elizabeth (Libby) Sims. Susan helped in the delivery of Libby’s two children.

 

Following her retirement from nursing, Susan continued working, most recently for the Kansas Turnpike Authority in Lawrence. Susan was passionate about reading, gardening, and travel. Her first trip abroad was backpacking through Europe with her sister Barbara. She frequently joined family members to explore the United States, including annual trips to Camp Walden in Michigan with sister Peggy, and to the Walnut Valley Music Festival in Winfield, Kansas. Her most recent trip abroad was to Budapest, Vienna, and Venice with daughter Aubrey Vaughn.

 

Throughout her life, Susan was dedicated to helping those in need of a supporting voice, from championing women’s rights to volunteering at the Headquarters Counseling Center in Lawrence. She is lovingly remembered for her extraordinary love and big heart, and for the aid she provided to the causes and people she sought to help.

 

Susan is preceded in death by her father Robert Jay Rose, sister Barbara Rose Hilton, and husband Charles Mixon. Survivors include two daughters Aubrey Vaughn and Libby (Roy) Sims; grandchildren Emma and Roy Sims; mother Dorothy Rose; brothers John (Verna),  Van (Judy) , Scott, Jim (Patty) , and sister Peggy; and numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.

 

The family suggests memorials to the Headquarters Counseling Center, 211 E. 8th, Suite C, Lawrence, Kansas, 66044.

 

Memorial Celebration

 

At Susan’s request, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, August 5, 2011, at the Lenexa United Methodist Church, 9138 Caenen Lake Road, Lenexa. Dress casual and share your fond memories.

Johnny Allen Myers

Johnny Allen Myers, 65, Shawnee, Kansas, died Friday, July 29, 2011, at the Shawnee Mission Outpatient Pavilion at Prairie Star Parkway, Lenexa, Kansas.

 

Johnny was born in Kansas City, Missouri, to John E. and Waneta Myers. He was graduate of Park University. Johnny was a US Naval Reserve. Johnny was a retired Lt. with the Overland Park Fire Department. Johnny enjoyed hunting, fishing and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.

 

Johnny was preceded in death by his father and mother, sister, Janie Burch and grandson, Zach Myers. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Brenda Myers; daughter, Jennifer (Tim) Hager, Shawnee, Kansas; two sons, John (Kim) Myers and Jerry (Tanya) Myers, all of Lenexa, Kansas; two sisters, Berniece Wells and Faye Ann Laird both of Shawnee, Kansas; brother, David Myers, Ft. Scott, Kansas; and eight grandchildren.

Byron “Barney” Crance

July 27, 2011

Byron “Barney” Crance, 96, died July 27, 2011, at Olathe Medical Center after an unexpected illness.

 

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Marjorie “Margie” and is survived by his son James Crance (Carole) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; daughters, Barbara Bates (Steve) of Olathe, Kansas and Deborah Caldwell (Tom) of Lenexa, Kansas. Barney was a grandfather of 10 and a great grandfather of 20.

 

Barney led a long life filled with interesting jobs, long lasting friendships and a devotion to his family like no other. He was a devout Elks member and attained the status of Exalted Ruler before retiring from the chapter. Marge and Barney would dance the night away at Elks events and even performed in a band with Barney on drums and Marge singing. He was a member of Overland Park Lutheran Church where he ushered and assisted wherever needed. He was a kind, loving compassionate man who was loved by many and will be missed by all.

 

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Delmar Gardens of Overland Park where Barney lived for the last 5 years and the kind and caring staff at Olathe Medical Center who cared for our family during this difficult time. Rest in peace dear, sweet man.

Michael F. “Rattlesnake” Scherer

Mike Scherer, 47, Kansas City, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at his home. 

 

Mike was born in Kansas City, Kansas, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a graduate of Turner High School and a veteran of the US Marine Corps and Navy. Mike enjoyed motorcycles, outdoor sports and charity events.

 

He is survived by his two daughters, Holly Jaklevich and husband Matt, and their children, Aidyn, Faiyth and one on the way, Olathe, Kansas and Cassie Scherer and her mother, Tammy Scherer, Kansas City, Kansas; mother and father, Sharon and Walter Scherer, Kansas City, Kansas; two sisters, Michele and Ed Hale, Merriam, Kansas and Kim Scherer, Kansas City, Kansas; brother, Todd and Brenda Scherer, Kansas City, Kansas;  and many other family  and friends.

Frederick Bernard Schnittker

Frederick Bernard Schnittker, 90, passed away July 26, 2011, at Trinity Nursing and Rehab in Merriam, Kansas. 

 

He was born April 30, 1921, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Emil and Mabel (Lange) Schnittker.  Survivors are his wife, Yvonne, a sister, Mary Jane Farmer, a brother, Frank, and many nieces and nephews.

 

At an early age Fred showed a genius for radio electronics and when WWII broke out he used his skill in telemetry in the Army Signal Corps from 1944 to 1949.  Photomapping was being developed as a cold war intelligence tool when Fred was in service and this became his primary career, continuing in a civil service position in the Aerospace Cartographic and Geodetic Survey after his 1959 discharge from the Air Force until his retirement in 1974. 

 

In 1975, he and his wife, Yvonne, chose Shawnee, Kansas, as a place to retire because of friendship with a priest at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.  Fred invested himself in his community being active in Knights of Columbus, Shawnee Noon Optimists, Sertoma, Shawnee Radio Amateurs Communication Team and Shawnee Wonderscope Children’s Museum.  He was honored by Governor Joan Finney for his extraordinary service and work when Wonderscope was developed.

 

The family suggests memorials may be made to Animal Haven, 9800 W. 67th Street, Merriam, Kansas, or a charity of your choice.

Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Friday, July 29, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m.  Entombment in Resurrection Mausoleum, Lenexa, Kansas. 

Leonard Hanks

Leonard Hanks, 85, Shawnee, Kansas,  passed away Monday, July 25, 2011, at his home.

 

Leonard was born in Slater, Missouri, to William and Bernadine Hanks. He was a veteran of the US Navy during WWII. Leonard was present at the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima and received commendation for his service from the commander of the US Navy.

 

He retired from Southwestern Bell in 1979 after 35 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 327, St. Joseph Catholic Church and Telephone Pioneers of America.

 

Leonard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary (Keller) Hanks; two daughters, Lynne Koestner and husband, Mark, Creve Coeur, Missouri and Patricia Funk and husband, Richard, Freeman, Missouri; sister, Doris Calovich, Kansas City, Kansas; three grandchildren, Kevin Koestner and wife Suzanne (Elkins), Hilary Funk and George Funk; two great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Nickolas Koestner; and many nieces and nephews.

Scott A. Young

Scott A. Young, 53, of Edwardsville, Kansas, passed away July 25, 2011. 

 

Scott was born March 18, 1958, in Atlantic, Iowa, to Tom and Marjorie (Downing) Young. 

 

He is survived by his parents,;wife of 20 years Susie Vogt Young; and brother Terry Young. 

 

He was a loving father to three and grandfather “Papa” to five who also survive him. 

 

Funeral Service

 

A  funeral service will be held 10 am, Thursday, July 28, 2011, at the First Baptist Church of Bethel, located at 75th and Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, Kansas.  Burial will follow in Edwardsville Cemetery.

 

 

William C. Mueller

William Mueller, 58, Lenexa, Kansas, passed away July 22, 2011, at his home.

 

William was born in Nashville, Kansas, to Henry J. and Margaret Mueller. He was a graduate of Washburn University. William was the night auditor for Holiday Inn in Olathe, Kansas, for over 20 years.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Charlene E. Mueller in 2004 and brother, James Mueller in 1947. Survivors include his two brothers, Paul Mueller, Peoria, Illinois and Stephen Mueller, Sawyer, Kansas; four nephews and a niece.

Ruth Morelock Johnson

Ruth Morelock Johnson, 93, passed away Friday, July 22, 2011, at Sweet Life at Grand Court, Overland Park, Kansas.

 

Ruth was a first- grade teacher in Kalamazoo, MI, for many years. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Gordon O. Johnson and their son, Donald G. Johnson. Survivors include daughter-in-law, Karen Johnson, Overland Park, Kansas; three grandchildren: Donald G. (Shannon) Johnson II, Sterling, Virginia, Laura (Bob) Jones, Olathe, Kansas, and Sarah (George) Legg, Lenexa, Kansas; 9 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, July 28, 2011, at Green Castle Cemetery, Green Castle, Missouri.
