Winifred L. Schroeppel

Winifred L. Schroeppel, 92, of Shawnee, Kansas, died peacefully at Kansas City Hospice House, on March 21, 2011.
Winnie was born in Pattonsburg, Missouri, on January 3, 1919, the daughter of Grace Eulinger Wright and Samuel Wright. Winnie graduated from Winston High School in 1938. Winnie married John Edwin Tilly in 1941; together they had two daughters, Cheryl Sue (Schultz) in January 1945 and Michele Elaine (Shimamura) in May 1947. The marriage was dissolved in 1951. She married Eugene Theodore Schroeppel in 1952; together they had one son, Mark Randall in June 1953.
Winnie was a talented seamstress and worked for Sears teaching clients how to use sewing machine features; she also constructed furniture slipcovers. Later, she worked for H. Lynn-White constructing window coverings; her specialization was Austrian shades. She also made most clothing for her children including winter coats, prom dresses, Halloween costumes, neckties, and a suit for her son. Primarily a mother and homemaker, Winnie assumed leadership roles in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and participated in various other activities with her children. She valued reading and education and spent many hours at the library with her children encouraging them to achieve academically.
Winnie was an accomplished gardener, cook, and artist as well. She took great pride introducing new foods to her children and modeled good nutrition choices. She also instilled a deep respect for animals and cared for many family companion animals. Through the years, she continued her loving care for children, nurturing neighbor children and her own grandchildren by reading books, participating in activities, and making clothes. In 1997 Winnie was chosen for the state of Kansas “Heart of FCE Award”.
Winnie was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Herbert Wright; sister, Frances Tilly; husband, E.T. Schroeppel in 2008, and daughter, Cheryl Schultz in 1996. Surviving family members include her daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Wes Shimamura; son and daughter-in-law Pam and Mark Schroeppel; and grandchildren include Misty Schultz (Derek Gaulding), Derrick Lee Schultz, and Adam Edward Schultz.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Shawnee Heartland Assisted Living and Kansas City Hospice House who cared for mother in her final months and days.

Charls Mark Serviss, 65, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2011, at his home.
Charls was born June 16, 1945, in Kansas City, Kansas, to John C. and Ernestine C. Serviss. He worked for Johnson County Developmental Supports for over 40 years and for the last seven years he attended their OPAL Program.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his sister, Jonetta Manis and husband, Bill, Shawnee, Kansas; nephews, Will and John; nieces, Kim, Christine and Kathleen; four great nephews and three great nieces.

Amelia Grace Johnson, 4, Shawnee, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly at Children’s Mercy Hospital on Wednesday, March 16, 2011.
Amelia is survived by her parents Shawn and Tracy Johnson and a sister Libby.

Ruth Ann Guise

Ruth Ann Guise, 57, of Shawnee, died peacefully on Wednesday March 16, 2011.
Ruth was born on October 23, 1953, in Norfolk, Virginia, daughter of Edwin and Ruth Bleam of Leavenworth Kansas. Ruth excelled in 4-H and crafts during her formative years, and then developed skills in hunting and fishing. She graduated from Basehor High School. After a 20 year career in nursing, ranging from the delivery ward to trauma care to heart surgery, she met her devoted and loving husband Timothy Guise. Health problems derailed further progress in nursing and she tried her hand in growing flowers which she loved, making jams and pies at which she excelled, and dealing in antiques in which she had a keen eye.
She is survived and will be sorely missed by her husband Tim; her son David Russell Martin who she loved dearly; her parents Ed and Ruth Bleam; and siblings Kenneth Bleam (Cheryl), Howard Bleam (Connie) and Carolyn Hollingshead (Keith) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
We will forever remember her indomitable spirit and strength in the face of so much adversity throughout her life.

Earnest Spillman Ford

Earnest S. Ford passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011, with his family at his side.
Earnie was preceded in death by his wife Genevieve, parents Roy and Flossie Ford, four brothers and one sister. He is survived by two sons, Roger H. Ford and Richard S. Ford; daughters Cynthia L. Koob and Christina Coleman; eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Earnest was born August 6, 1920, in Carthage, Missouri. He graduated from Carthage High School and attended Carthage Joiner Business College. Mr. Ford was a WWII veteran and served his country honorably as a US Navy Chief Yeoman and Naval Intelligence Attaché in Lisbon, Portugal during the war. Earnest moved to Mission, Kansas, in 1950 and helped establish the city of Mission in 1951. He owned the Farmer’s Insurance business in Johnson County, Kansas. Earnie later owned a Fluffy Fresh Donut business and worked in management for Durvet. He was a member of Saint Michaels and All Angels Episcopal Church.

John DeCloud

John DeCloud, 87, former long-time resident of Kansas, passed away December 27, 2010, in Mesa, Arizona, after a brief illness.
He was born on January 12, 1923, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was a member of the United States Marine Corps and served in WWII and Korea. Following his military service, John became a professional photographer, owning and operating DeCloud Portrait Studios, which was founded by his parents in 1927. He was an avid boater and former commander of the Kansas City, Missouri chapter of the U. S. Power Squadron, a boating education and safety organization.
John is survived by Fran DeCloud, his loving wife of 62 years, who currently resides in Phoenix, Arizona.

Richard Lee “Rick” Carlson, 57, Merriam, Kansas, died March 13, 2011, at Kansas City Hospice House.
Rick was born January 28, 1954, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, to Harold R. Carlson and Anna D. (Sanders) Carpenter. Richard was a loving father, husband and son. He was loved by his family and friends throughout his life and 7 year battle with brain cancer. He was a member of Carpenter’s Union Local 168 and the Westwood Lutheran Church. Richard enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle and spending time with his wife and family.
Rick was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife, Vicky (Oden) Carlson; mother, Anna D. Carpenter, Kansas City, Kansas; four children, Amy Langford and husband, John, Tonganoxie, Kansas, David Carlson and wife, Kelly, Shawnee, Kansas, Zach Carlson and wife, Melissa, Kansas City, Missouri and Sara Bergerhofer and husband, Josh, Kansas City, Kansas; and 14 granchildren; two step children, Jenni Scott and husband, Darrin, Carrollton, Missouri and Phillip Henderson and wife, Rachel, Raymore, Missouri; brother, William Shane Carpenter and wife, Lori, Piper, Kansas.

Daniel Edward Mayo

Daniel Edward Mayo, 59, passed away March 13, 2011. Danny was born at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, on February 20, 1952 to Mildred JoAnn (Borland) and Joseph Lloyd Mayo. He attended elementary and high school in Webster Groves, Missouri, and graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School with the class of 1970. He was awarded the Order of the Arrow as a Boy Scout.
Danny started his career in entertainment as a high school sophomore when he and some friends began producing 60’s style light shows for local rock bands in St. Louis and Kansas City. He studied radio and television production at the University of Kansas and graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Danny’s career in the entertainment industry included a variety of jobs ranging from lighting director and road manager for music artists, managing various venues, to designing and installing stage sets for all types of performances and corporate functions.
Danny is survived by his parents, Joe and JoAnn Mayo of Shawnee, Kansas; his brother Michael and his wife Megan (McMahon) Mayo of Independence, Missouri and their children Rachael Mayo of Raytown, Missouri, Michelle Zastrow and husband Dan of Independence, Missouri, Kelly Stoll and husband Joseph and daughter Gwendolyn of Rota, Spain, TJ Mayo of Guam, and Erin Noah and husband Mike and daughters Lillian and Arianna of Independence, Missouri; his sister Deborah Dooley and her husband Jack of Blue Springs, Missouri, and their children Brett Dooley of Tempe, Arizona, Eva Dooley of Seattle, Washington, and Henry Dooley of Atlanta, Georgia.

Alice G. Wickersham

Alice G. Wickersham, 87, of Fairway, Kansas passed away Sunday morning, March 13, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City.
Alice was born October 10, 1923, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Dr. Axel I. and Elizabeth E. (Shoemaker-Heckert) Anderson. She grew up in a family of eight children and attended Westport High School. Alice married Price D. Wickersham on June 2, 1943, in Connecticut. He preceded her in death on July 21, 2010.
In the early years of their long marriage, the couple resided at Lake of the Forest near Bonner Springs, Kansas, but then relocated to California and Colorado before returning to the Kansas City area. They lived in Fairway, Kansas, for more than 40 years. Alice focused largely on her friends and family. She pursued her interest in genealogy passionately.
Alice is survived by her daughters, Joan Papineau of Atchison, Deborah Lowery of Lawrence; her son, John Wickersham of New York, and their spouses; sister Martha Obenland of Roeland Park; and grandchildren, Kimberly Papineau, Kansas City, Emily Hanley, Los Angeles, and Adam Wickersham of Chicago.
