Florence H. Osburn

Florence H. Osburn, 95, Leavenworth, passed away March 31, 2011, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

 

Florence was born May 29, 1915, in Indianapolis Indiana.  She worked for the Board of Church Extensions for 15 years before retiring in 1969. She was a former member of Downey Christian Church.

 

Florence is preceded in death by her two husbands Gip Henderson Schmidt and William Ray Osburn, her sister Mary Katherine Chavers, and brother Donald Hester. She is survived by her son Gene Schmidt and wife Jackie; her step-son Richard Osburn and wife Charlotte; her brother, George Hester and wife Sue; three grandchildren and several neices, nephews and friends.

 

Visitation and Services

 

Visitation will be 10:00-11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.  Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m.  Private family burial will be at Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Donald L. Thompson

March 30, 2011

Donald L. Thompson, 87, of Shawnee, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at the Kansas City Hospice House.

 

Don was born to Rose and John Thompson on October 8, 1923, in Vinton, Iowa.  Don was very active in high school, having served as class president, lettering in three sports, member of the National Honor Society and Glee Club, as well as sports editor for the yearbook.  After graduating in 1941, he attended college at the University of Iowa before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. 

 

Don served as a navigator on the B-17 “Boeing Belle”, with the “Bloody 100th”.  He flew 35 combat missions over occupied Europe and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.  Don flew three missions on D-Day supporting the invasion forces on Normandy. 

 

After his service Don returned to college and earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.  Upon graduation he taught Business Law at the University of Kansas before entering the banking industry.  Don retired in 1988 as an officer of  InterFirst Bank in Houston, Texas.  He was an avid gardner and golfer.  Don was very proud of scoring two “holes-in-one”. 

 

Don is preceded in death by his sister, Terry.  He is survived by his son Steve Thompson and wife Gayle, Overland Park;  daughter, Candace Oerth and husband Doug, Moore, South Carolina; his wife Carolyn Thompson, Shawnee; stepson, Kent Roberts and wife Bobbie, Lake Quivira; brother Dennis Thompson, Vinton, Iowa; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.   

 

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to The World War II Museum, 945 Magazine Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130.

Louis Norman Gaignat

March 29, 2011

Louis “Norm” Gaignat, 89, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away, Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at his home. Norm was born in Turner, Kansas, and farmed until the flood of 1951.  He then worked as a machinist for Boise Cascade until he retired in 1986. He was an Army veteran of WWII. He was an avid bowler and missed a perfect game by one pin. He loved to garden and had a passion for his tomatoes and his manicured yard.

 

He married Ova Harbour on April 14, 1948, in Muncie, Kansas. He is survived by his wife, Ova; a daughter, Jeanette Vanderfeltz and her husband, Stephen, of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sons, Jim Gaignat and his wife, Debbie, of Stilwell, Kansas and John Gaignat and his wife, Lisa, of Shawnee, Kansas; four grandchildren, Michelle Kever and her husband, John, Marcus Dibben and his fiancée, Lacey Harmon, Christopher Gaignat and Kendall Gaignat, and two great grandsons, Gaten Willis and John Kever, Jr.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Visitation will be from 1 – 3 p.m., with memorial service at 3 p.m.

Dr. Martha Louise Hurley

March 29, 2011

Dr. Martha Louise Hurley, 56 of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away at Shawnee Mission Medical Center on Tuesday March 29, 2011.

 

Martha was born in Concordia, Kansas, the second child of James and Helen Hurley.  She graduated from Glasco High School in 1972, then Kansas State University in 1976.  She graduated KU-Med in 1979.  She finished her residency at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.  Martha practiced as an OB/GYN in several areas bringing over 7,000 lives into this world.

 

In 1983 she married Alan Hullman and had three children to this union. 

 

Along with caring deeply for her family and friends, she loved animals, the outdoors, travel, and dance. She was very caring, loving, loved and will be missed dearly. 

 

She was preceded in death by her father James Hurley in Febuary of 2011.  She was survived by her children, Andrea Hullman, Danny Hullman, and Kevin Hullman;  her mother Helen Hurley; sister Mary (Roger) Mosher;  brothers Charles (Chris) Hurley and Alan (Janet) Hurley; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. 

 

Visitation

 

Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.   Burial will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 4, 2011, in Glasco, Kansas.

Alice A. Fairfield

Alice A. Fairfield, 83, of Roeland Park, Kansas, passed away March 29, 2011. 

 

Alice was born February 21, 1928, in Seneca, Kansas, to Roy and Teresa (Lueb) Becker.  She was united in marriage to Raymond Fairfield on December 5, 1948 in Seneca, Kansas. 

 

Alice is survived by her husband of 63 years; her daughters, Joan Nutt (Gary) and LaDonna Bonewits (Ron); grandchildren, Kimberly Ryals (Jeremy), Jason Bonewits (Michelle), Justin Nutt, Lucas Bonewits, Brandon Bonewits (Cristin); great-grandchildren, Spencer, Avery, and Kenna Ryals, Patrick, Ashley, Brooklyn, and Blake Bonewits, Ashley Wiegel, and Riley McCombs; and her siblings, Richard Godbout, Ronald Godbout, Mary Jo Berges, Harley Becker, Don Becker, and Phil Becker.

Wilhelm Von Messinger, 53, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at his home.   Wil was born December 21, 1957, in Lubbock, Texas, to Harry and Maurine (Knehans) Messinger.

 

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry F. Messinger, February 25, 2009. Wil is survived by his mother, Maurine Messinger, Shawnee, Kansas; brother, Frederick K. Messinger and his family,  Lenexa, Kansas; and sister, LiZette’ Roberts and her family, Kansas City, Kansas.  Cremation.

David A. Aguilar, Sr.

David A. Aguilar, Sr.,  56, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away Tuesday morning, March 29, 2011, at the University of Kansas Medical Center. 

 

David was born November 2, 1954, to Timothy and Patricia Aguilar in Kansas City, Missouri.  David graduated from Shawnee Mission North in 1973.  He worked as a trackman and equipment operator for the Union Pacific Railroad for 36 years before retiring in February of 2010.  David was an avid golfer and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

 

David is preceded in death by his mother, Patricia and his brother Timothy, Jr.  He is survived by his loving wife Debbie, of 17 years; two daughters, Mary Fugate and Victoria Aguilar both of Belton, Missouri; a son David, Jr. and Whitney of San Francisco, California; his father Timothy, Sr., of Mission, Kansas; a sister Veronica Foote and husband Michael, Olathe, Kansas; a brother, Patrick Aguilar and wife Glenda, Lenexa, Kansas; three step daughters, Cheryl Myrick and husband John,; Michelle Nava, Jackie Alejandre and husband Petie, all of Kansas City, Kansas; 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Pagelene M. “Page” Keeney

March 25, 2011

Pagelene M. “Page” Keeney, 74, Shawnee, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 25, 2011, at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Merriam, Kansas.

 

Page was born May 25, 1936, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Joe P. and Nola M. (Ross) Biggers.  She was a graduate of the Paseo High School.  On December 4, 1954, Page married Jack Keeney in Kansas City, Missouri. Page and her family has lived in the Johnson county area for the past 40 years. She was employed with PBN until retirement in 2009. Page was a member of the Overland Park Christian Church and  a member of ABWA.

 

Page was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Marie Ponce of California. Survivors include her husband, Jack Keeney; two daughters, Jackie Farmer and husband, Jerald, Wichita, Kansas and Mindy Keeney, Shawnee, Kansas; son, Brian Keeney and wife, Kari, Olathe, Kansas; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Claude M. Howard

March 24, 2011

Claude M. Howard, 88, of Mission, Kansas, died peacefully at home on  March 24, 2011, following a full life.        

                          

He was born on August 25, 1922, to Claude M. Howard, Sr. and Mary Roher Howard.  He grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1940.   He graduated from Kansas State University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity following his service to his country during WWII.  Claude served in the United States Navy as a fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater.  He earned many citations including the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and a Purple Heart. 

 

Claude’s life was marked by his love for his family and his service to others.  He worked for the Kansas State Employment Service for 25 years, retiring in 1985.  He gave years of his life to coaching little league sports, being on the organizational committee for the early stages of the YMCA football program.  He touched many lives through this football program and his 3 & 2 Baseball coaching.   Claude served on the Mission City Council during the late 1970s.  Following his stroke in 1983, Claude became a charter member of the Stroke Support group at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, providing hope and inspiration to others that life continues in spite of limitations.  He pursued his love for building as he built a lake home for his family to enjoy.   His retirement years were filled with woodworking projects that his family will treasure as a lasting legacy to pass from generation to generation. 

 

Claude was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James T. Howard, his sister Vivian Howard Wyatt, and nephew James T. Howard, Jr.  He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eda Mae Howard, sons Steve Howard (Debbie), Trey Howard (Jan), and daughters Kay Bailey (Lane) and Cindy Collins (Alan), 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. 

 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Vitas Hospice in honor and appreciation for the support and care they provided during the final weeks of Claude’s life.

Edwina Marie Fritz

Marie Fritz, 84, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away March 22, 2011. 

 

Marie was born October 14, 1926, in Akron, Ohio, to William E “Stoney” and Betty (Hedrick) Stone.  She grew up in Millville, Kentucky, and attended Translyvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, where she met her husband Dr. Harry G. Fritz of Portsmouth, Ohio.  After raising seven children Marie worked at the Hiersteiner Child Development Center where she retired at age 80.   

 

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Harry Fritz and by her daughter Betty K. Fritz.  She is survived by her children; Harry Fritz, Jr. (Nita), Edwin Fritz (Ann), Grace Fritz, William Fritz (Susan), John Fritz (Kelly), and Richard Fritz (Janine).  She is also survived by her sister, Ann Ellis (Clenet) and 15 beloved grandchildren. 

 

Contributions may be made to the Hiersteiner Child Development Center at JCCC or Sunflower Healthcare (Hospice).
