Matthew Robert Shacklett, 26, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on October 31, 2010, from a tragic car accident.

 

Matthew was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on October 4, 1984, to Brent Shacklett and Penny Shacklett. 

 

Survivors include his loving mother; fiancée Brittany Straub; and sister Becky Matthews. Matthew was preceded in death by his father Brent Shacklett.

Trevor Ryan Olson

October 31, 2010

Trevor Ryan Olson, 29, of Overland Park, passed away Sunday, October 31, 2010, in a fatal car accident in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

Trevor was born December 29, 1980, to Teresa and Terry Olson in Kansas City, Missouri.  Trevor graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1999.  Trevor was a charming, charismatic young man and was always the life of the party.   He enjoyed music, drawing and painting.

 

Trevor is preceded in death by his father Terry in March of 2008.  He is survived by his mother, Teresa Montgomery; brother, Tyler Olson, Olathe, Kansas; daughter Maura Olson Stewart, Grapevine, Texas; and two step-sisters, Kathryn Montgomery, Chicago, Illinois and Melissa Montgomery, New York, New York.

 

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Maura Olson Stewart Fund.  Contributions may be made at any branch of the National Bank of Kansas City.

Lester L. Hale

October 30, 2010

Lester L. Hale, 81, Shawnee, Kansas, passed away Saturday, October 30, 2010, at the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri.            

 

Mr. Hale was a veteran of the US Army and the Navy. He was a machinist for Proctor and Gamble for 33 years, retiring in 1984.

 

Lester is survived by his wife, Jean (Hansel) Hale; four daughters, Sue Horton, Kansas City, Missouri, Connie Byard, Overland Park, Kansas, Barb Austin, St. Charles, Illinois and Leslie L. Smith, Louisburg, Kansas; two sons, Tim Hale, Concrete, Washington and Curt Hale, Shawnee, Kansas; 16 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Visitation and Funeral Service

 

Visitation will be 10:30-11:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m.  Burial in the Leavenworth National Cemetery. 

Chloe Cheyenne Gardner

Chloe Cheyenne Gardner, age 1, DeSoto, Kansas, passed away Saturday, October 30, 2010, at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center, Overland Park, Kansas. 

 

Chloe was born August 21, 2009, in Merriam, Kansas, to Patrick and Katie (Shipley) Gardner. She is survived by her parents, Patrick and Katie; brother, Brennan Gardner of the home; grandparents, Kenny Gardner, DeSoto, Kansas, Rene Robinson, Raytown, Missouri, Dena Shipley, Mound City, Kansas and Phillip Shipley, Prairie Village, Kansas; great-grandparents, Ray and June Shepherd, Mound City, Kansas and Charles and Sue Gardner, DeSoto, Kansas and Myron Shipley, Lawrence, Kansas; aunts and uncles, Erin Gardner, Katie and Brian Lopez, Chad Shipley, Thomas Shipley and Brian Shipley.

James Kerns

October 29, 2010

James Roland “Jim” Kerns, 84, Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away Thursday, October 28, 2010, at Carondelet Manor, Kansas City, Missouri. 

 

Jim was born October 23, 1926, in Lincoln, Kansas, to George and Evelyn Kerns.  In 1943 he joined the United States Navy, retiring after 22 years with the rank of Chief Commissaryman in 1965.  He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and during the Vietnam Era. After Jim’s tour in Hawaii, he met Carrie Lowe, the love of his life and they were married in 1948.

 

Following retirement he and his family moved to Overland Park, Kansas, where he started his career with Glenwood Manor.  Jim also worked with Grand American Hotel Management. Following retirement, Jim spent his remaining years at HyVee in the meat department.  Jim was a member of the Fleet Reserve and a longtime member of the Kansas and Missouri Hotel and Restaurant Associations.  

 

Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathryn Kerns, parents and his sister, Donna Andreasen. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Carrie Kerns; two sons, Michael Kerns and his wife, Sharon, Portland, Oregon, and Mitch Kerns and his wife, Chris, Prairie Village, Kansas; three sisters, Lou, Sue and Joann;  five grandchildren, Christina, Christopher, Tara, Kyle and Scott; and four great grandchildren.

Deborah Hanson

October 26, 2010

Deborah Hanson, 42, of Shawnee, passed away Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at the Kansas City Hospice House.  

 

Deborah was born February 25, 1968, to Donald and Dee Pavelka in St. Louis, Missouri.  Deborah graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1986.  After graduation she attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where she received two Bachelor’s Degrees  in Music and Music Education. 

 

While at Trinity she met David Hanson.  They were married December 28, 1991, in Kirkwood, Missouri.  In 1991 Deborah attended the Manhattan School of Music to study opera.  She left early to pursue a career in musical theatrical acting.  As an actress she appeared as Luisa in the original New York production of “The Fantastiks”, she also appeared in roles at the Kansas City Repertory Theater and the Actors Theater of Louisville. 

 

Deborah moved to the Shawnee area in 1998, where she worked as a music teacher for the Monticello United Methodist Church Children’s Center.  Deborah was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church, Actor’s Equity, as well as being a 4-H Leader.  Deborah was a former member of Job’s Daughters.    

 

Deborah is survived by her loving husband of 18 years, David Hanson; a daughter AJ, and a son, D Henry.  Her parents, Donald and Dee Pavelka, and  a sister Amy Studt, all of Kirkwood, Missouri. also survive her.

A Celebration of Deborah’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m.,  Saturday, October 30, 2010, at Monticello United Methodist Church in Shawnee.  The family will greet friends from 10-10:30 a.m. at the church.   

 

 

Kathy Powers

October 25, 2010

Kathy J. Powers, 58, Merriam, Kansas, passed away Monday, October 25, 2010, at her home.

 

Kathy was born June 4, 1952, in Decatur, Illinois to Alva Edgar and Charlotte (Durbin) Stafford.  She was graduate of Monticello High School, Monticello, Illinois. On December 27, 1975, Kathy married Stephen Powers in Monticello, Illinois. She was a registered nurse, retiring from Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

 

Kathy is survived by her husband, Stephen Powers; daughter, Jessica Powers, Greenwood, Missouri; son, Christopher Powers and his wife, Kendra and granddaughter, Addison, Roeland Park, Kansas; and sister, Pamela Sue Baker, Monticello, Illinois. 

 

Kathy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be missed greatly.

LaDonna Biggerstaff Swayne

October 25, 2010

LaDonna Biggerstaff Swayne, longtime Caney, Kansas, resident now of Shawnee, Kansas, left her earthly home on Monday, October 25, 2010.

 

She was born June 18, 1929, in Caney, Kansas, to Lloyd and Effie (Hughes) Graves.  She attended Caney schools and graduated from Caney High School in 1947.  LaDonna married Earle Biggerstaff in May 1948.  After Earle’s death in November 1987, she married Bill (Sonny) Swayne in October 1992.  Sonny also preceded her in death.

 

LaDonna was a member of the Caney United Methodist Church for 70 years.  Through the years, she was very active in serving her church.

 

LaDonna held an assistant funeral directors license helping her husband in their funeral homes in Caney and Coffeyville.  She later worked at Calvert’s Department Store in Independence, Kansas.

 

She was a lifetime member of the Caney Golf Course, Order of the Eastern Star and held the office of Past Worthy Matron.  She also was a Mother Advisor for the Order of Rainbow for Girls.  LaDonna was a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and past president of PTA.  She was a charter member of the Caney Historical Society and served as an Ambassador, she was also a charter member of the Caney Alumni Association.

 

LaDonna was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Katherine Graves; and son, Bradley Biggerstaff.  She is survived by two daughters, Lori Biggerstaff and husband Greg DiMaggio, and Becki Fink and husband, Steve; daughter-in-law Jonita Biggerstaff; two grandsons, Jason Biggerstaff and wife Samantha, and Braxton Fink; two granddaughters, Mindy and Katiemay  Biggerstaff; one step-grandson, Steven Fink; one step-granddaughter Chelsea Fink; and one step-great granddaughter, Avery Fresbee.

 

The family suggests memorials to the Caney United Methodist Church, 114 N. High Street, Caney, Kansas 67333.

There will be three visitations.  Shawnee Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, October 26, 2010, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee; Coffeyville Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday, October 29, 2010, at David W. Barnes Funeral Home; and Caney Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Friday, October 29, 2010, at Potts Chapel. 

 

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 30, 2010, at the Caney United Methodist Church, Caney, Kansas.  Interment will be at Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney, Kansas.

Gloria J. Staubus

October 23, 2010

Gloria J. Staubus, 78, passed away Saturday, October 23, 2010. 

 

Gloria was born October 5, 1932, to Fogel Potter and Radar Frost. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Charles Staubus; sister Betty Frese and husband Richard; sons Kent Staubus and wife Merilou of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Keith Staubus and wife Kim of Dallas, Texas; and grandchildren Austin, Andrew, Addi, and Matthew. Gloria was predeceased by her son David Kraig Staubus as an infant.    She was a  lifelong resident of the Kansas City area, she is also survived by a host of cherished lifelong  friends.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Prairie Bible Institute, Box 4000, Three Hills, Alberta, Canada T0M 2N0.  

 

Visitation and Funeral Service

 

The family will greet friends at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, October 27th, with services to follow at 11:00 AM at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, Kansas.

Richard “Dick” J. Page

October 23, 2010

Richard J. Page, 74, of Shawnee, Kansas,  formerly of Northport, New York,  passed away October 23, 2010.

 

Dick was born November 11, 1935, in New York to Joseph Edward and Evelyn Page.   Dick retired in 2006 from Suffolk County DPW as a Senior Art Director.  He was united in marriage to his wife Janet on September 2, 1967.

 

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Jacqueline Pascarelli and Evelyn Segeritz. 

 

He is survived by his wife Janet; daughter Geralyn Krist and husband Scott of Shawnee;  daughter Lauren Page of New York; granddaughters, Alexis and Ashleigh Krist; and nephews and nieces.
