Joseph Aaron Morris

Joseph Aaron Morris, 80, Kansas City, Kansas, passed away, surrounded by his family Thursday, September 16, 2010, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.
Joseph was born June 15, 1930, to Ai Morris and Elsie Morris of Spencer, Iowa. As one of six farm kids Joseph grew up with a strong work ethic and a love of nature. Joseph joined the U.S. Army and served as a cook during the Korean War where he met his wife Melba Lungstrom Morris.
Joseph worked for Simmons Mattress Company, owned his own lawn and landscaping company, Morris Maintenance Inc., and retired from the Turner School District. Joseph was never one to sit around and was involved with the Kansas City, Kansas Republican party, Master Gardeners, and was an avid Christian that helped others. Joseph loved to garden and do woodworking. Joseph’s favorite saying was, “can’t never tried.” “If you don’t try to accomplish something then you will never know if you would be good at it or not.”
For the last 2 years Joseph has been a loving caregiver to his wife Melba, who resides at Shawnee Gardens Nursing Home. They were married 56 years.
Joseph is survived by is wife, Melba Lungstrom Morris; sisters Bethal Smith of Shell Knob, Missouri and June Scott of Spencer Iowa; son, David D. Morris; daughter, Mary E. Morford; two grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Joseph will be missed by his family and friends but is now in the arms of his heavenly father.

Visitation and Graveside Service
Visitation will be 2-4 pm, Sunday, September 26, 2010, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Graveside service will be 10:00 am, Monday, September 27, 2010, at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Doris Jean Tilghman
September 15, 2010
Doris Jean Tilghman, 86, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on September 15, 2010.
Doris was born May 5, 1924, in Topeka, Kansas, to Aaron and Dorris (Collins) Ausherman. She attended Topeka High School and met her first husband, Joe Lee Houser in Topeka. He was a B-26 pilot in WWII and was killed on a mission over Germany in 1944. They had two sons: Glen Aaron and Joe Lee Jr. In 1949 Doris married H.F. (Jack) Tilghman of Topeka, who adopted her two sons. They moved to Merriam, Kansas in 1951 and spent the rest of their lives in Johnson County.
She was an avid traveler and was very active in Trailblazers. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, bird watching, painting, and had a lifelong love of animals. She made friends easily and during her last years at Grand Court and Park Meadows, she enjoyed socializing and playing cards with the new friends she made there. “Oma” will be greatly missed by her family.
Doris was preceded in death by Jack and her half-brother, William Cherry. She is survived by her two sons; five grandchildren: Stephanie, Abigail, Michel, Amie Katherine, and Jennifer; 11 great-grandchildren; and half-sister, Donna McFadden of Oregon.

Irvin “Irv” W. Hoffmann

Irvin “Irv” W. Hoffmann, 76, of Lenexa, Kansas, died peacefully at his home on September 11, 2010.
Irv was born in on February 2, 1934 in Pendleton, Missouri, the only son of Karl Hoffmann & Beulah Pallardy.
After graduation from Mexico, Missouri, High School, Irv enlisted in the US Air Force where he was trained as an Air Traffic Controller which led him to his 40 year career with the Federal Aviation Administration. Irv served in many positions including the Chief and Deputy Chief of a number of air traffic control towers in the Midwest.
After retiring from the FAA in 1994, Irv extended his public service to the local community of Lenexa where he had lived since 1985. He served as a City Councilman, a member of the DeSoto and Lenexa Rotary Clubs and President of the Lenexa and Monticello Historical Societies. He was selected to be a member of the Lenexa Volunteer Hall of Fame and received many honors including being recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution for his community service as well as the Johnson County Commission on Aging for his dedication to seniors and was named the Kindest Kansas Citian.
Irv’s current passion was his work as the President of the Kansas Silver Haired Legislature. He established the Geriatric Nursing Scholarship Fund that the SHL awards each year.
Irv loved the holidays. He was well known for bringing holiday cheer to the children in his neighborhood by his haunted house at Halloween and his bright Christmas lights.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl Hoffmann and Beulah Pallardy. He is survived by his wife Susan; sister Patsy Haake, St. Charles, Missouri; his 100 year old Aunt Anna Hoffmann, Hawk Point, Missouri; five children: Mark Hoffmann, Sacramento, California, Cherry Hoover, Roseville, California, Miles Hoffmann, St. Peters, Missouri, Kelley DeMaris and husband Mike, Des Moines, Iowa, and Kirk Hoffmann, Hendersonville, North Carolina; his grandchildren Nikki, Paige and Cameron; his niece Alicia and husband Torrey; and great nephew and niece, Eric and Tara.

Cynthia L. Johnson

Cynthia L. Johnson of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away on September 14, 2010, at Villa St. Joseph long-term care facility in Overland Park, Kansas.
Cynthia was born on February 6, 1919, on a farm near Sparks, Kansas, to Conrad E. and Martha Mary Johnson who preceded her in death. She attended Sparks Elementary School and graduated from Sparks High School. Cynthia graduated from Highland Community College, received her undergraduate degree from Emporia State Teacher’s College and a masters degree from Kansas State University. Cynthia was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma educational sorority and also an Eastern Star member. Her first teaching position was at Iowa Point, Kansas, teaching the primary grades 1 to 4. She also taught first grade in Highland, Kansas, before going to Highlands Elementary School located in the Prairie School District, in Prairie Village, Kansas, in 1958. Cynthia retired in 1991 after dedicating fifty-two years to teaching children. She truly loved teaching, believing all children had the ability to learn and encouraged them to always do their best. She said, “I’m happiest when I’m teaching as every day is like the first day I taught–fun for all!” Cynthia was the first teacher to be honored in 1984 as an excellent first grade teacher in Kansas City and the surrounding counties.
Cynthia is survived by her brother Conrad and his wife Jean of Troy, Kansas; nephews Greg Johnson, Troy, Kansas and Kreg Johnson, Platte City, Missouri; niece Mary Jean Kuester, Lakeview, Arkansas; and several great nephews and nieces.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Villa St. Joseph for their care during the last several years. They also especially want to thank J.J. Shipley from Daughters & Company for her regular visits and companionship.

Visitation and Funeral Service
Funeral services will be held at the Community of Christ Church, Fanning, Kansas, on Saturday, September 18, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. with Elder Donald Harter officiating. Visitation will be held one half hour prior to the funeral. Internment will be in the Mount Olive Cemetery, Troy, Kansas.
June Agnes Rettig Horn

June Agnes Rettig Horn, 77, of Lenexa, passed away Sunday, September 12, 2010, at St. Luke’s South.
June was born June 3, 1933 to the late Roger and Agnes Rettig in St. Louis, Missouri. June graduated from Hancock High School and attended Memphis State University. She was an active volunteer. She volunteered in the nursery and hospice with the University of Kansas Medical Center. June also served as a counselor with Planned Parenthood as well as a guide for an art museum in Memphis, Tennessee. June was a former member of Hillcrest Christian Church and Afton Christian Church.
June is survived by her loving husband, Ray D. Horn; a daughter, Stephanie Horn; two sons, Chris Horn and wife Maggie, Richard Horn and his wife Rosa; two sisters, Joan Sheppard, and Linda Rettig Meyer; a brother, Roger Rettig; eight grandchildren, Autumn, Daniel, Emily, Jeremiah, Jessica, Kirstin, Richard, and Samantha; and 4 great grandchildren Ryan, Nolan, Krista, and Joseph.

Dorothy (Renner) McNatt
September 11, 2010
Dorothy (Renner) McNatt was called to her eternal home on September 11, 2010. God granted her an earthly life of 97 years, 9 months, and 6 days. She now lives with the Lord forever.
Dorothy was born December 5, 1912, in Shawnee, Kansas, to George and Esther Renner. Dorothy was baptized on April 17, 1927. She joined Salem Lutheran Church confirming her faith March 24, 1929. She graduated from Shawnee Mission Rural High School in 1931. Dorothy worked for the Shawnee Mission food service for many years and also worked for Mission Cleaners in Merriam, Kansas. Dorothy was a long time member of the Shawnee Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary as well as the Shawnee Historical Society.
On August 24, 1935, Dorothy was united in marriage to William Verne McNatt, he preceded her in death on May 8, 2009. Dorothy is also preceded in death by a brother, George L. Renner, in September of 2002 and a sister, Mildred Cooley in August of 2009.
She is survived by two children, Barbara Schweiger and husband Tom and Nancy Jewell and husband Bryant; four grandchildren, Kent Schweiger and wife Karen, Karry Hamilton and husband Wes, Derrick Jewell and wife Cindy, Stacey Parsley and husband, Jim; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren, one sister Eleanor Trager, and an honorary daughter Vickie Wilson.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m., Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel. Dorothy will be laid to rest in the Shawnee Cemetery following services.

John Paul VanGoethem, 39, Kansas City, Missouri passed away Friday, September 10, 2010, at the Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas.
John was born January 10, 1971. in Kansas City, Missouri, to David and Cheryl (Sumstine) Van Goethem. On June 17, 2000, John married Loretta Miller in Stilwell, Kansas. He was a draftsman at Burns and McDonnell. John was a member of the South Kansas City Model Railroad Club.
John is survived by his wife, Loretta (Miller) Van Goethem; parents David and Cheryl Van Goethem, Stilwell, ansasS; two sisters, Sheri Kennedy and her husband, Todd, Overland Park, Kansas and Melissa Van Goethem, Kansas City, Missouri; grandparents, Robert Van Goethem and wife, Linda, Louisburg, Kansas, Donna Van Goethem, Overland, Park, Kansas and Harold and Hazel Sumstine, Stover, Missouri; father-in-law, Harold Miller and wife, Vernice, Waverly, Kansas; mother-in-law, Lydia Miller, Westphalia, Kansas; two brothers-in-law and their spouses, John and Loretta Miller, Garnett, Kansas and Henry and Dacia Miller, Lindside, West Virginia; and many family and friends.

Dorothy Marian Smith

Dorothy Marian Smith, 83, of Lenexa, Kansas, died at her home on September 10, 2010, after a long illness.
Dorothy was born September 6, 1927, the daughter of William (Sr.) and Janette Heinig of Milton, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her daughter Linda M. Smith. Her brother, William (Bud) Heinig, Jr. and her sister Pricilla Kinney also preceded her.
Before her marriage, she attended Salem College in Salem, West Virginia. On September 4, 1949, she married Kenneth E. Smith, Jr. and began a 61 year marriage partnership. She supported him through his education, ministry, and his career in academia and health care. She took pride in the careful management of her household and family. Her commitment to family also extended to her church family. She was an active member of the Nortonville (Kansas) Seventh Day Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; her son, D. Scott Smith and daughter-in-law Jean F. Smith of Salem; five grandchildren; Aaron, Kevin, Carlie, Amanda, and Heaven; great-grandson, William Hemminger; three sisters-in-law; and 13 nieces and nephews.

Rev. Lloyd R. Bilhimer

Rev. Lloyd R. Bilhimer, 86, of Baldwin City, Kansas, passed away September 9, 2010.
Lloyd was born February 5, 1924 in Kansas City, Kansas, to Harold A. and Lena O. (Lynn) Bilhimer. He served in the US Navy following graduation from Shawnee Mission High School. He Trained in Chicago and was deployed on the Antiweta Cruiser Battleship. Lloyd was united in marriage to Mary Jean Grinter in 1947. He graduated from Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, in 1948.
He served as pastor of Shawnee Assembly of God, Dodge City Assembly of God, Wichita First Assembly of God, Lawrence First Assembly of God, Argentine and Baldwin City Assembly of God, McPherson, Kansas Assembly of God and in Dearborn Michigan.
He is survived by his wife Jean Bilhimer, his sons, Steve, David, and Jim Bilhimer, and a daughter, Lisa Pippert, 12 grandchildren and 12 great-granchildren. He is also survived by a brother Glen Bilhimer and a sister Lois Bear of Shawnee, Kansas. Lloyd was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He touched many lives through his ministry.

William M. Hambelton

William M. Hambelton, 87, of Shawnee, Kansas, died September 9, 2010 at home.
Bill, the son of Oliver M. Hambelton and Emma Obermeier is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wilma, and his six children, Cassandra Williams (Richard), Paul Hambelton (Judith), Nancy White (Donald), Donna Sawyer (Neal), John Hambelton (Lisa) and Timothy Hambelton (Kristal). He had 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Bill was born in 1922 in Kansas City, Kansas. He was a veteran of World War II serving as a U.S. Navy aviator. After leaving the service he farmed in the Butler, Missouri, area before he began a long career with the FAA. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the St. Joseph Funeral Luncheon Committee.
