Wanda Jo Evans

Wanda Jo Evans, 88, of DeSoto, Kansas, went home to the Lord on August 23, 2010.
Wanda was born May 11, 1922, to Joseph and Sarah Burndage. Wanda was legally blind and was a member of the West Central Workers of the Blind. In August of 1994 she served as president of the WCWB.
She loved to write poems, dance and play Pinochle and Pitch.
Wanda is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Wayne E. Evans, and one grandchild. She is survived by three children, Rodney Evans, Shawnee, Kansas, Bill Evans, Blue Springs, Missouri and Rose Ellen Conner, Scottsdale, Arizona; 8 grandchildren, 13 great -randchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation and Funeral Service
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, August 27, 2010, at the Monticello United Methodist Church, 23860 W. 75th Street, Shawnee, Kansas 66227. A Celebration of Life service will follow at the church at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, Overland Park, Kansas.

Sergeant Nicholas Scarpelli, 29, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Friday, August 20, 2010, in Dade County, Missouri, due to injuries sustained in a traffic accident.
Nick is survived by his wife Jackie of the home, his parents Nicholas Joseph Scarpelli, Wichita, Kansas; and Dorothy Mohney, Wichita, Kansas; grandparents Bill (Elaine) Rudolph, Wichita, Kansas; Iva Garrett, Wichita, Kansas; and three sisters Shawna Scarpelli, Jessica Dawn Bell, and Kendra Lynn Bell, all of Wichita.

Julia Ann Wilson (Julie) age 77, passed away August 19, 2010 in her home located in Overland Park, Kansas.
Julie was born January 8, 1933, in Swains, New York, daughter of Ernest and Grace Morris. Julie was raised in Bath, New York, with her four brothers and one sisiter. Julie joined the Air force in 1948 and served for three years. The Air Force is where she met her husband of 57 years Paul T. Wilson (Jerry). Julies proudest moments were raising her six children.
She loved reading, sports of all kinds, family activities, and of course laughing at her beloved Jerry’s constant jokes! She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and now great grandmother who will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her husband Paul T. Wilson (Jerry); her brother Roger Morris (Nancy),;six children, Dee O’Brien (Jack), Paula Murray (John), Scott Wilson (Pam), Andrew (Tim) Wilson (Winnie), Jenny VanLerberg (Steve), Jeremy Wilson (Michelle); her grandchildren Jesse (Julie), Travis, Jason, Jake, Alex, Sarah, and Jack; and three great grandchildren.
Visitation and Memorial Service
Visitation will be Sunday, August 22, 1010, 3-4:00 p.m., at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 p.m., at the chapel. Inurnment will be 9:00 a.m., Monday, August 23, 2010 at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Regina L. Bates, 85, Shawnee, Kansas passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at the Wilshire at Lakewood Nursing Center, Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
Regina was born March 25, 1925 in Kansas City, Kansas to Frank and Margaret (Devlin) Hashman. She was a 1943 graduate of Ward High School, Kansas City, Kansas. On May 17, 1946, Regina married Elmer Bates in Kansas City, Kansas. She was an education aide at Flint Elementary School for 20 years.
Regina was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer in 2000, daughter, Patricia Ann Bates in 1961 and brother, Robert Donald Hashman, 1977. Survivors include her three daughters, Susan Erny and husband, George, Mapleton, Kansas, Janet Reed, Gardner, Kansas and Mary Mangini and husband, Bill, Kirksville, Missouri; three sons, John Bates and wife, Barbara, Olathe, Kansas, Joe Bates and wife, Sue, Gardner, Kansas and Jim Bates and wife, Carolyn, Lee’s Summit, Missouri; brother, Frank Hashman and wife, Kate, Olathe, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and many other family and friends.

Justin Taylor Brown, 18, Merriam, Kansas, passed away at home on Monday, August 16, 2010.
Justin was preceded in death by his great grandfather Willard Andachter and is survived by his parents Kelly and Randy Baldwin, sister Abby and brother Ryan all of the home. Other survivors include his great grandmother Louise Andachter, grandparents Bernadette Andachter, Walt (Mary) Chadwick, Sam (Alma) Baldwin. Five aunts and uncles Shelly (Mike) Bentz, Todd (Kris) Chadwick, Jason (Tanya) Chadwick, Rick (Cindy) Baldwin, Andrea (Jim) Zarda, and 14 cousins Erika, Jessica, Brendon Bentz, Kaitlan, Kerrigan, Haley, Chayce Chadwick, Braden, Tyler Chadwick, Jama, Kelly Baldwin, Jamie, Samantha, Lindsay Zarda, Justin’s best friend Kelsey Calkins and numerous family and friends.
Justin will be remembered most for his zest of life and will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Nora Ann (Swartz) Merrell, 75, Merriam, Kansas, passed away Monday, August 16, 2010, at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Merriam, Kansas.
Nora was born June 19, 1935, in Dwight, Kansas, the youngest of 10, to Harry and Birdie (Krute) Swartz. She was a 1953 graduate of Dwight High School. She worked in accounting most of her life and retired from Tension Envelope Company in 2010.
Nora was preceded in death by her son, Roger Eugene “Chippy” Wilson, Jr. in 1956. Survivors include her two daughters, Paula Werts, Merriam, Kansas and Danielle Wilson, Kansas City, Missouri; three sisters, Carleen Bach, Overbrook, Kansas, Pauline Dutton, Dwight, Kansas and Harriette Merritt, Ogden, Kansas; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Emily Margaret Allen Witham

Emily Margaret Allen Witham passed away August 16, 2010, at Indian Creek Healthcare Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Fairway, Kansas. She was born January 13, 1914, to Perry S. and Ola Allen in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from Rosedale High School and Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri. She attended the School of Journalism at the University of Kansas where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority.
She began her career as a business secretary in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1938, she and Lawrence R. Witham were married. EM, as she was affectionately known, was a 77 year member of Gamma Phi Beta where she devoted much volunteer time. She served as President of the Greater Kansas City Alumnae Chapter. She was chosen Woman of the Year in 1974, and received the National Merit award in 1975. Her preciseness and attention to detail were assets that help the organization run smoothly prior to the computer age. She served over 40 years on the executive board. Emily Margaret also served as Assistant Clerk for the City of Fairway for eight years. In addition to her organization skills, EM was an excellent cook who delighted in surprising her friends with homemade treats. She was featured in the Kansas City Star column “Come Into My Kitchen” in 1977.
She was a member of Village Presbyterian Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Lawrence R. Witham, and brother, Perry Allen.

Henry W Brame, Sr., 88, of Kansas City, Kansas, died peacefully at home on Sunday, August 15, 2010.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia Hope McCorkle Brame, and sons Henry Jr. (Carol), Bill (Julie) and Chris and daughters Barbara (Jack) Wright, Claudette (Gordon) Metsker, Jennifer (Kris) Cook, Glenda (Terry) Rowlett and Charlotte Benkert; 20 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
His extended family includes brother William E. Brame, and sisters Eva More, Martha Wilson and Bonnie Burks and many nieces and nephews. Henry was loved and respected by such a large circle of family and friends, they can’t all be named.

Richard Lee Matheson

Richard L. Matheson, 92, made his final journey August 14, 2010.
His wife of 57 years, Mary Margaret Matheson, and his parents Lee and Gertrude Matheson preceded him in death. A daughter, Marilyn and son, Jack Matheson, survive him. He also leaves a granddaughter, Laurie Davies, her husband Bobby and 3 great grandchildren. Remaining family and friends will miss him very much.
Upon completing 2 years at Fort Hays State, he served in the Air Force in the Pacific theater during World War II. Upon returning, he continued his employment at Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. completing his career as Vice President at retirement. As a long time resident of the Kansas City area, he loved playing golf, traveling the world and enjoying life at it’s fullest. He had a passion for life and visiting unusual places around the country.
Services
A private memorial will be held at a later date.
Any gifts or donations can be made, in his name, at City Union Mission, Wayside Waifs, Ducks Unlimited or Kansas City Hospice House.
Cora Ruth (Adams) Toevs

Cora Ruth (Adams) Toevs, 87, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away at the home Saturday, August 14, 2010 with family present.
Ruth was born in Argentine, Kansas, August 7, 1923 to Fred C. and Iva L. Adams. She moved to Newton, Kansas where she married her high school sweetheart, Donald Toevs, on February 18, 1944. She attended Bethel College in Newton.
Ruth was a devoted wife and mother. After her children were raised Ruth worked as a Special Education Paraprofessional with the Kansas City, Kansas School District for 19 years. Ruth belonged to Jobs Daughters and Eastern Star. She enjoyed sewing clothing for her children and giving 4-H sewing instruction. She had an artistic flair for ceramics and knitting. She enjoyed the outdoors with camping, canoeing, fishing and morel mushroom hunting. She and Donald maintained contact with retired Washington High School staff and always enjoyed their get-togethers. Ruth participated in a 5 year breast cancer research project, STAR.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Donald; five children: Susan (Rod) Anderson, Nancy (Jim) Snowberg, Fred (Yandell) Toevs, Peggy (Jake) Hess, and Julie Gaunce; ten grandchildren: Richard, Andy, Candie, Jill, Samantha, Adam, Becca, Cole, Evan, and Lane; and five great grandchildren.
