Richard Edgar Lander
Richard Edgar Lander of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away surrounded by his six loving children on Monday, March 29, 2010, following a brief illness at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Dick, as he was known by everyone, was born in Lansing, Kansas, on May 23, 1931. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1949. He attended the University of Kansas and began his first job with Union Pacific Railroad where he met the love of his life, Margaret Bollinger. They married on January 13, 1951, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri.
Dick spent his working career at Kansas City Power and Light as a Lead Lineman Splicer and retired after 40 years with Locan IBEW #1464. He took great pride and was instrumental in the building and lighting of the first Bishop Miege High School football field in 1973.
He was a charter member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. Dick enjoyed life to the fullest and brought joy to those who loved him. He had many interests and totally enjoyed a day on the lake fishing or in the field bird hunting with his family. He loved to travel. It was very rare not to see him smiling and whistling.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years; his only son, Rick Lander, his wife, Pam; also his five daughters, Cathy Hare, her husband Bob, Peggy Lander, Jane Ferber, her husband Scott, Julie Burger, her husband, Mark and Jill Darbyshire, all of Shawnee Mission, Kansas. He is also survived by his adoring 19 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, with 2 more expected soon.

To the family of Richard Lander and especially to Cathy Hare and Julie Burger my sympathy on the loss of your husband and father. Richard was a wonderful father;no wonder he had such great children. Grandchildren, remember all the wonderful things you did with your grandfather and savor those memories. You are all in my thoughts and prayers during this sad time. Anita
Dear Cathy and Landers sisters (and Rick, of course,)
I am so sorry to hear about your dad. I have many fond memories of coming to your home as a kid, and being treated kindly by your whole family. I can’t make it to the services, but will be thinking of you all. Sending my sympathy and prayers. Mary Jo
Dear Lander Family,
We are sorry to hear about your loss. Unfortunately we just received the word to late to attend the visitation or services. I was very fortunate to work with Dick at KCPL for most of my 42 years there. Being a lineman we worked together and he helped with my training. We had many good times, lots of laughs and enjoyed talking about our part time projects with our families. He was a very good worker and proud of his craft. He was a good friend and regret we can’t be with your family today.

We was so sorry about the loss of your dad. He was a great person and I enjoyed working with him for several years. We had the chance to see and visit with him at Don Fultz’s visitation in Nov. and he seemed so active and healthy that we was shocked when we heard of his passing
We just found out yesterday and when we checked this morning about the services it was too late for us to get there. Our sympathy and prayers are with all of you.

We are so sorry to hear of Dick’s passing, only finding out today. Roy worked with him at KCPL, and Dick came to hunt at our farm in Melvern. We enjoyed seeing him at the coffee’s at Denny’s once a month. He will be missed.
