I think Gene will be forever remembered as one of Shawnee’s best citizens. His love for history and the community made an impression on everyone that he met. In the years that I’ve covered Shawnee, I’ve always enjoyed the times I got to chat with Mr. Amos, whether it was for a story or because I just happened to sit by him at a chamber lunch or another community event. He will be missed.
Gene was a dear friend of my deceased father, Ted Bilyeu. My mother and I extend our deepest sympathies to Margaret and family.
Consummate Professional, a man of Pride & Dignity. Will be missed in the community. God Bless.
I cannot imagine Gene’s wise counsel and friendship being absent from the many lives, he touched so many through the years. A man of deep and and abiding faith, he exemplified integrity, compassion, and gentility…to say nothing about his friendship. God’s peace to him, Margaret, Gregg, Amy, Joni, and their families.
Gregg Margaret and Family
So sorry to hear about Gene’s passing.
He taught me so much about the Funeral Business.
It’s only because of the Amos Family I was able to get any where in the funeral business, for that I will always be grateful.
Your all in my prayers.
Jared Jost
Gene was the consumate Rotarian and the embodiment of Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self”. It has been my honor to have known him through Rotary. He is a community treasure who will be greatly missed.
We are so sorry to hear of your husband/father’s passing.
He was truly one special person to so many.
Love,
Dee Anna and Charlie Lichtenauer
I will remember Gene as a dear friend, mentor, true Rotarian by all means and one of the best Johnson County citizen I met. My wife Margaret and I extend our deep sympaties to Margaret, Joni and family.
To Margaret, Gregg, Joni, and Amy – my heart breaks that another Saint of God has left this earth, but my what a gain in heaven. You will never know how much Gene touched my life while working at the funeral home. He was such and honest and caring businessman. Gene got me involved in Rotary shortly after I began working at the funeral home – if anyone ever lived the moto of Rotary, it was Gene Amos. Margaret, as I told you next to every good man; there is always a good woman; and you two were such an exceptional couple. You were such a good example for us young couple. God will bless you through this time – just remember you have not lost Gene – he is in heaven and his memory will always be alive in your heart. I love you guys!
Mrs.Amos, Greg Amos and the entire Amos family,
Please accept my heart felt condolances for the loss of Mr. Amos. From everything Greg has told me, Mr Amos was a fighter. Being a cancer survivor myself I am well aware of some of the issues he had to endure.
Again I am very sorry for your loss.
Sicerely,
Jon and Lanie Browar
We are sad to read about Gene’s passing. We pray that the entire Amos family finds comfort and peace from God and from knowing that Gene was a wonderful community leader. Anyone can read the heart-touching article in last Sunday’s Star magazine about the Amos family and recognize the tradition of integrity and leadership we have right here in Shawnee. Deanne Rieke Bacco and Lou Bacco
Amy, John and family,
We are so sorry to hear about your dad. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I know how close you were and know you are very sad. Remember the good times and how much love there is in your family.
Love, Dan, Carol and Megan Gabriel
Gene, The memory of you and your goodness AND your corny jokes will be a bright spot in my heart. always. I know Royal embraced you upon your arrival! He has great respect and admiration for you. Now you two can see who has the best joke. and can compare memories of wonderful Rotary days. Bettye Brown
Margaret & family:
We cherish the many memories of being with you and Gene. You were both so gracious in educating and guiding us in our District Rotary duties. We love you both.
Gene was one of my very favorite District Governors of Rotary. He was a very special person and a delight to know. My heartfelt sympathy to the family.
Gene was a great man. His passing is a tremendous loss to the community. Our prayers and heartfelt sympathy to Margaret and the entire Amos family.
Charlie & Chris Clark
Gene will be both missed and remembered. The city is a better place because of his involvement. He touched many lives and served the community well.
Your family will be in our prayers. We did not know Eugene well, but from the stories told to us it sounds like he was a true role model for a parent. You wonder where the new generation will learn from and how. He must have been a very generous, patient and kind man. I know that there is no easy way to let go of a parent. Please accept our thoughts and prayers for your family.
My prayers are with Margaret and the family, but we all know he is in a far better place. I served with Gene on all of our class reunions except the last one, and had a nice visit with him at that one last year – 60 years of knowing a bright and funny and compassionate man was my privilege.
I only had the pleasure of knowing Grandpa Gene for the two+ years that I dated his grandson, Matt (we are now married). I knew from the start that Gene was a special person – he was so gentle, loving and knowledgeable about so many things. His years of service make up a list longer than I have ever seen. He loved my husband and taught him so many things in his life. I will be forever grateful for him and blessed to have known him. I know his memory will be with us forever and I pray for comfort and peace for Margaret and the rest of the Amos family. Gene is physically gone but his presence will always be with us.
MARGARET AND FAMILY, I WANT TO THANK YOUR FAMILY FOR TAKING SUCH PRIDE IN MOMS SERVICE (BARBARA JONES) YOUR DAD WAS SICK THE SAME TIME AS MOM THEY WERE AT SHAWNEE MISSION HOSPITAL TOGETHER AND BOTH SHARED THEIR FAITH AT MERRIAM CHRISTIAN CHURCH. THEY ARE BOTH UP IN HEAVEN REJOICING AND NOT SUFFERING. GOD BLESS YOU AND OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU. OUR CONDOLENCES
I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to the Amos Family. I think of Gene often…he wrote a story about Christina’s illness. He was a great man and we will miss him. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
Margaret and the entire (extended) Amos Family:
We are all saddened to hear of your loss. Gene was a wonderful and inspirational man. He touched all of our lives and we are proud to have known him.

Gene Amos was friend and counselor. At the death of my father, Floyd M. Garner in 1982, Gene allowed me, as the son, the honor or our family tradition to be present for the preparation.
Gene was one of a small group of men who were giants of my world which included my father, Forrest Haggard, Ben Cash, Jim Mueller, Ed Dillon and Ray Hobbs, among a few others.
I will miss Gene with many who will continue to hold him in the highest regard, in death as in life.
Many warm thoughts of love and affection for this kind and gentle man. DMG
Margaret amd family -
I am so sorry to hear of Gene’s passing and offer my condolences for your loss. In the time that I knew Gene, I can’t remember not recieving a handshake and a smile, some kind words and usually a humorous story whenever I saw him.
I offer my prayers and sympathy to you all.

When I chose Amos family home for my future burial plans, I had the priviledge of meeting Gene . That meeting let me know that here was a man that was the epitome of gentlemen. The community has lost one of a kind. He has done so much for the area. He may be gone, but his memory will always be with us. Your will be in my prayers Margeret, Gregg, Joni and Amy. God bless you all.
Gregg, the four most important men in my life have been my dad, your dad,Dink Fry,and Ken Johns. Now it’s down to two. I have always thought the world of your folks. I cherish your friendship. Dave
I feel blessed to have met Gene during my physical life, as his work here embodies the Jesuit principle of service to others.I know that Gene is in heaven and that his presence here will be sorley missed.
Joni and Matt: Even tho I didn’t know your Dad/Grandpa personally, one doesn’t have to go far to hear others speak of hm fondly. Although his illness was lengthy and his passing not unexpected it doesn’t lessen the grief. My deepest sympathy to you both. Sandy Rabinoff (LaPetite)
A GREAT humanitarian, patriot and Rotarian. Thanks be to God for sharing him with us. We will miss him.
Amy and family, I am so sorry about your dad. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Mary, Steve, Andy, Jeff Givens
To the Amos Family,
I was honored to serve with Gene in the Kansas House of Representatives. Gene was the ultimate gentleman who lived his life with kindness and concern for all he encountered.
There are thounsands of families who were given tremendous comfort by Gene and your family during very sad and painful times. May you now accept the comfort and love from many to whom Gene and you extended such for all these years.
I AND MY BROTHER LARRY BOTH PLAYED SOFTBALL WHEN GENE COACHED FOR THE DEMOLAY. HE WAS TRUELY A GREAT FRIEND. MY WHOLE FAMILY HAS USED THE SERVICES OF AMOS FUNERAL HOME. MY WIFE AND I AND MY SISTER ARE THE ONLY ONES LEFT IN THE FAMILY. MY FAMILY GREW UP IN MERRIAM. HE WILL BE MISSED.
GERALD G. (JERRY) KNOBBE
Gene practiced the Golden Rule to treat others as you wish to be treated. I believe that he carried a graveside committal service in his pocket in case the officiant could not make it. He was the only board chair person to serve one and one-half years. Overland Park Christian Church changed from July 1 year to a calendar year during his term. Ray Hobbs, founding godfather of OPCC, served longer, but after that each served just one year. Gene was also a Trustee of the church. Gregg was an usher. Margaret sang in the choir. Margaret, Joni and Amy all helped in Sunday School. It was an honor to serve with this family. They attended to important details in their work and in their personal life.
I am so sorry for your loss. Gene was truly a wonderful man that made a difference in this world! I don’t my Dad ever talked as highly of anyone as he did of Gene. My mother wanted me to let the family know that you will all be in our hearts and prayers. If there is anything that we can do, please let us know.
Rene’
My Shawnee Mission Unified School Board remembrances are that Gene Amos always brough a lot of wisdom, and a bit of humor, to the often contentious discussions of the Board.
I, and the Kansas City community to which he gave so much, will deeply miss Gene.
Sincerely,
Bill Nulton
We are thinking of all of you and wish we could help with the loss you feel. Our prayer will be for you to be filled with all the wonderful gifts your father and grandfather gave you to help with not having him physically here with you.
Sincerely, Terry and family
I was sorry to hear of Gene’s passing. When I worked and lived in Shawnee, Gene was helpful to me. He always took time to talk to me and I appreciated that from him. I’m sorry I will not be able to attend his service. My thoughts and prayers are with Greg and his family.
I just happened to be reading last weeks newspaper today which had an article about the Amos family and their funeral business. Gene Amos really impressed me. The whole family impressed me as well. I picked up today’s local paper and then I was really shocked to see he passes away Friday. I regret having not known him as I would have been very impressed by him. It is too bad that sometimes you discover someone after it is too late. It sounds like his son, Greg, is going to be a super fine person also. I wish the family the best and I am glad I have discovered remarkable, honest, and the utmost best people there can be, the Amos Famlly, from Gene onwards.
Take care now, and I wish you the best from the bottom of my heart.
Fred Hall
It is difficult to lose a husband, father, and grandfather who has made such a strong impact on the lives of so many. The love of your family for each other and others shines brightly for all. Know that you have been in my prayers and will continue to be so.
Mary

Margaret, Gregg, Joni, Amy & all of the family:
I have a great many fond memories of Gene, spanning the past four decades of his life. I cannot imagine any other person who will be missed so very much by so many. My deepest sympathies to all who loved him….
Joe B. Vise
I MET GENE IN 1957 WHEN I WORKED AT THE SHAWNEE BANK. I ALWAYS ENJOYED TALKING TO HIM. HE WAS A PRINCE OF A MAN, AND WILL BE MISSED. HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS WERE SO MANY, WE WERE BROTHERS IN MASONS AND SHRINE. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW GRACIOUS AND CARING HE WAS. GOD HAS TAKEN A GREAT PERSON HOME.
On behalf of all the Bernard Sullivan family children please accept our condolences four your loss of Gene. He was a good friend to Bernard & Grace during their life time.
To Margaret and family: We don’t have to tell you again how much
we thought of Gene, but we want you to know, we, like all the others had tremendous respect for him too. Gene was my e-mail buddy for a long time and I looked forward to his messages. I will always be grateful for the support he gave me last year when I had a leading roll in the church. I will always be grateful to all of you for letting me be a part of your world when he was so ill. I feel very sad right now, but rejoice for Gene that he has finally moved to the eternal home that he earned and worked for all his life. Our love, thoughts and prayers are with you. Pat and Eddie Reed
To the Amos Family,
It was a great privelege to have been associated with the Amos family through Rotary. Gene was a wonderful Rotarian, and contributed so much. We will all surely miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time.
With our love to all, Jody & Stan Teeter
My wife and I extend our deepest sympathy to all of the Amos family in the loss of Gene. He was truly a fine and giving person.
On behalf of the men and women of the City of Shawnee Fire Department, please accept my most sincere condolences in Gene’s passing. Not only to our Department, but to the entire community in so many different ways has Gene always been a friend.
Best,
Jeff Hudson
Fire Chief
Dear Margaret and Greg:
I had the privilege of working with Gene on several services for people from Shawnee United Methodist Church. I greatly enjoyed working with Gene. He always seemed glad to see me. He was unfailingly friendly and helpful. I loved his sense of humor. He will be missed by the entire community.
I retired from active ministry on June 30 of this year. I would like to take this opportunity to say that I have appreciated working with Amos Funeral Home over the years. As I worked with other Funeral Homes I came to highly value the professionalism and thoroughness I experienced in working with Amos. I know that Gene had a lot to do with setting the standard.
I will be holding you in thought and prayer in this time of separation from one so central to you.
Peace, Leslie Van Blarcom
My heartfelt sympathy to all of the family. Gene was a tremendous mentor to me while going to mortuary school in 1980-81. I have so many wonderful memories of Gene and all of the Amos family while living in Shawnee during that time. Please know that you are in our prayers. Love, Doug and Elaine Meloan
Our condolences and great sympathy on behalf of the Shawnee Mission Northwest High School Class of 1972 go out to the entire Amos Family on the passing of one of our great community supporters and benefactors, Mr. Gene Amos. Most of us who graduated high school with his children knew of Mr. Amos’ work as school board member and active Shawnee community leader. Our class representative last saw Gene at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School’s 40th Faculty reunion this past May. Many of our classmates played on the baseball team(s) he supported. He was always so genuinely interested in all aspects of the community (including preserving the history of Shawnee, Kansas) and a great role model on how to be not just an “observer” but someone who can effect changes in a positive way, too – a real “do-er.” We will miss Mr. Amos so much for his great service and kindnesses to so many, however, he will forever be remembered by the SMNW Class of ’72 as a part of the best of our hometown of Shawnee.
Gene was the brother that I never had. His friendship along with his family was a support when pastoring Bristol Hill UMC. The family suppers, vacations, early morning tennis along with the many civic activities will never be forgotten. The Chance family is richer having known Gene and Margaret Amos.
My deepest sympathies to Gene’s family. He was a pillar in the community and a shining example of Service Above Self. I am so blessed to have known Gene and will keep all of his family and friends in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Sharon Zoellner
It has been a privilege to be considered among Gene’s friends for so many years.
His unfailing love and committment to his family, his career, and his community is a testament to his goodness and an example for all.
We feel extremely lucky to have been brought together through his dedication to his Rotary life.
God bless each and every one of his family and leave them with the proud acknowledgement of his accomplishments.
Dear Amos Family, I grew up in shawnee and one of the people that really stick out in my mind was Gene. No matter whenever or where ever I ran into him, he always had a smile a good word. We were all blessed to have shared our lives with him and Im sure we will see him again someday waiting for us with his smile and handshake. May God comfort you all. Mike Jackson
Dearest Margaret:
Our deepest sympathy to you and the family as well to the entire community who loved, admired and respected Gene.
I am so glad tha I was able to see him one last time at the Capitol when he was honored by his collegues for his contribution to the State of Kanas.
I can think of no one who knew him that didn’t love him.
He will be sorely missed.
Bud and Debbie Burke
Gene and I often met during the hardest of times. The first time we met was for a service at St Luke’s. It was the first funeral I had worked and I was nervous. Gene could see just how nervous I was, so he told me a few jokes. Every service after that, I thought back to that day, even when it was for my own family members. He always knew how to make you laugh. He was a man full of compassion. I know he will be missed by all that had the pleasure to meet him. My condolences to the Amos family.
Gene came to my class at Shawnee Mission North twice to speak about his profession as I taught a class on Death and the Unknown. He presented an informative and considerate discussion. He would only tell them what they asked. I particularly remember how he made them pay attention even if they got silly and uncomfortable. I remember him as a no-nonsense gentleman. He gave to his community in so many ways.
To Mary Margeret and Greg…and family
Time has past since I first Gene and family. I met him through Optimist Baseball…He had such an infectious laugh and smile which his son Greg now has. He was truely a great man and person and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. The earth lost a true friend but heaven gained a great angel.
I will always be grateful to the Amos Family for giving me a chance as a student to work at the funeral home while in school. Gene Amos was a great man someone who I always admired and appreicated his kindness and advise. He truly was a geniune person. I wish Margaret, Gregg and all the Amos my very best.
Gene Amos was indeed a great man, both in the community & as a person. I want to offer my deepest sympathy to the Amos Family during this sad time. John Dow
Gregg and family
Your father was a great man and I consider myself to have been very blessed to have known him. It is men like him that taught us all to be men of integrity and leaders of professionalism in our industry. I am sorry I could not attend the service but please know that you are in our prayers.
God Bless.
My condolences to the Amos family. My son, Zack, worked for the company during high school in the mid 90′s as a grounds keeper and Gregg and Brenda’s girls went to school with my sons. Zack and I extend our best wishes.
Dear Margaret and family, We were so glad we were able to come to the service for Gene and see you all from afar and hear everything said about Gene. We opened the K.C. Star Sunday to see Gene had died. We are so sorry and know how much you will miss him and his loving companionship. We are sorry we couldn’t stay to go to the cemetery, but we had out of town company coming that afternoon and had to leave right after the funeral. Larry did get to say hello to Gregg. Larry has wonderful memories of Gene, Mona and parents all living together in the old funeral home sharing one bathroom and refrigerator. You all have been so kind through the years to come to Independence for Orlie and Bernice’s funerals we wanted to pay our respects also. The funeral was so very special and Gregg and Joni gave such wonderful eulogies. Know you are in our thoughts and prayers and always in our memories. Love, Marge and Larry
Dear Mrs Amos and family-
I wanted to send you my sincere condolences on the passing of your beloved, Gene. I was the nurse in Dr Jackson’s office who checked his defibrillator, and saw him on a very frequent basis. Because of that he shared many stories about all of you, and I wish I could have gotten to know you all personally- he loved you all!
I was out of town at the time of his funeral- I wish I could have been there. Please, again accept my sincere sympathy of your great loss.
Sincerely,
Marti Nowak

We send God’s Blessings & Our Many Blessings to your whole family.I’m so sorry we couldn’t get to the services. We so much enjoyed the service on the computer. It was such a pleasure knowing Gene.
I just got back from being out of town for a couple of weeks & learned of Gene’s passing. I’m so sorry I wasn’t there to personally let you know how much of a friend he was for me. No words can express what a wonderful person he was & how much he will always be remembered. I’ll never forget how much of a help he was to me in my time of need – both personally & professionaly. I’ll miss him as well as so many others will.
We will surely miss your smile, friendship anf support over these many years.
Margaret, Greg, Joni and Amy,
So much goes through our minds when we think of all of the times that the Beatys’ and the Amos’ have spent together, especially when it came to baseball – Chuckie and Greg playing against each other when they were teens, Gene & Chuck spending time on the Northwest Advisory board, April & Joni going to high school together and attending Fire Dept functions.
Then it seemed that we were calling you when Chuckie died and then Chuck. Your family was always there and you were so helpful in those times of need.
There is nothing that words can say to help you through your grief and pain. We just pray that everyone whose lives that you have touched will be there for you in some way. We just want you to know that if there is anything that the Beaty family can do for you, all you need to do is call. We’ll do what we can.
We will miss Gene very much. He was a very special man and touched everyone that he came in contact with.
Again, we are here if you need us,
Sincerely,
April & Selma Beaty
Margaret and family:
It was a privilege to serve with Gene in the Kansas Legislature; he was always such a gentlemen, kind to everyone, caring about his family, community, state and nation. I loved his sense of humor and his dear kind heart.
He will be missed greatly by so many people and I know most of all by his family.
With warm thoughts and prayers,
Nancy Brown
I have known Mr Amos since I was a young boy growing up in Shawnee. Would like to express my condolences on behalf of the Bentz family Bob, Doris, Gary and Jan. Doris, my mother did a lot of work for the Shawnee Optomist’s years ago and became friends with Gene through their work together. Gary Bentz
Greg & the Amos Family.
My deepest condolences. Gene was a rock for many of my relatives in their time of need & for my family when our parents passed.
God bless!
Rita
Having grown up in Shawnee since mid-1960s, and being a part of the community through school and work, I knew who Mr. Amos was. I provided respiratory therapy for him at SMMC the last few years, but remember him for his presence in our town. One memory I have was when he was featured on Michael Feldman’s “Whad’Ya Know” radio show when it was broadcast from Shawnee several years ago. Mr. Amos’ love of community set a hallmark for all of us to reach. This condolence, though late in delivering to this site, is sincere, and I wish his family well.
